Hamas says Ismail Haniyeh chosen as Islamic group's leader

They had previously lived in Ashkelon (or Asqalan in Arabic), which is today part of Israel and just next to the border with the Gaza Strip.

Mr Haniya, 54, lives in Gaza, which Hamas has ruled since 2007, unlike Mr Meshaal, who lives in Qatar.

Hamas dropped its longstanding call for Israel's destruction and severed ties with the Muslim Brotherhood in its policy shakeup announced at its main overseas office in the Qatari capital Doha last week.

Militant Palestinian group Hamas has elected a new leader, further hinting the organization is trying to soften its image.

However, Hamas officials said the document in no way amounts to recognition of Israel as demanded by the worldwide community.

Haniya, 53, from the Shati refugee camp in Gaza City, is expected to move to Qatar.

The global community widely recognizes the area defined by the 1967 borders as the site of a future Palestinian state, sitting alongside Israel in a so-called two-state solution. Meshaal had led the movement since 1996.

In February, the group chose militant commander Yehiya Sinwar, one of its most hard-line figures, as its new Gaza chief in charge of the group's core power base. "The movement blesses this election which came in a consultative, democratic way that is homogenous with the lists and that shows the unity of the movement".

It comes a few days after Hamas unveiled a revised charter that eased its position on Israel and distanced itself from Islamist groups in the region in what was seen as a bid to reverse years of growing isolation in the region.

A spokesman for Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu said Hamas was "attempting to fool the world but it will not succeed". The election ended 40 years of political domination by the Fatah party.

Israel, along with Egypt, has been enforcing a border blockade against the group since then.

In 2006, after Hamas won the legislative elections, Haniyeh was chosen by the movement to form its first government.

Hamas stopped short of recognizing Israel in its policy document, stating there would be no "compromising its rejection of the Zionist entity and (no) relinquishing (of) any Palestinian rights".
