Facebook to add 3000 to monitor flagged content

According to a new report, Facebook is going to make its move into the premium TV-like show segment next month.

For the higher tier shows, of which there will be fewer, Facebook is apparently aiming for something at the level of Netflix's House of Cards. According to sources, this show, created by Conde Nest Entertainment, will have two participants go on a first date in VR before they actually meet in person.

While Facebook is interested in a range of content, one genre it's intensely targeting is teen-centric shows. The social network giant is reportedly developing nearly two dozen original shows which will premiere as early as mid-June.

Facebook will monetise its new premium service via advertisements that it'll play in between videos, which will boost revenue, but with lower margins.

Facebook has reportedly given the go-signal for multiple shows to go into production. The Business Insider report even claims that one of the shows has already cast a Hollywood A-lister.

The Facebook news comes a day after it was reported that YouTube is investing heavily to "produce more than 40 new original shows" that will be free and ad-supported.

"Sports is probably something that we'll want to try at some point", Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said on a recent earnings call. Considering the company will have added space to show more ads in the News Feed.

The announcement came after a spate of violent videos were shared on Facebook in the past month, including a murder and live confession in Cleveland that garnered a lot of attention in mid-April.

Facebook's forthcoming slate of original programming will inevitably compete against YouTube, which also announced on Thursday, May 4, that it would bankroll original shows starring A-listers the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, Kevin Hart, and Katy Perry.

"Earlier this year, we started rolling out the Video tab, a dedicated place for video on Facebook". Facebook has recently released applications for popular set-top boxes like the Apple TV which could prove useful as far as getting the content on actual TVs.

Clearly, Facebook plans video content as its major focus.
