The Kentucky Derby will be run on Saturday, and the spectacle surrounding the race has drawn thousands to Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky, for 142 years to watch a field of 3-year-old horses compete for millions in prize money.

"We needed one together", Pletcher said. It was not such a good day for other well-regarded runners.

"I thought our horse gave a nice effort", Battle trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said.

Going into his 17th Derby, Pletcher saddled the post-time favorite for the first time.

"This is the best horse Todd and I have ever come to the Kentucky Derby with", Velazquez said. "To me, I felt I really needed that second one, you know?" he said. "I think Todd Pletcher's horse is really fast", mentioning Bodemeister as his voice trailed off.

"We represent everybody who went to the racetrack for the first time with their dads and were astonished by the brilliance of these equine athletes and never fell out of love with the sport".

Having Velazquez as a passenger helped significantly in that regard.
