Marco Verratti scores controversial goal as PSG thump Bastia

Paris: Player of the year nominee Bernardo Silva was on target as Monaco eased to a 3-0 win at Nancy on Saturday to leave them on the brink of a first French title since 2000.

Last-placed Bastia was infuriated less at losing to French league contender Paris Saint-Germain 5-0 than at a PSG goal it considered unsporting on Saturday.

However, Monaco still have a game in hand and look set to finally break the Parisians' recent stranglehold on the title.

But Jardim has repeatedly stated that beating PSG to take the domestic crown is the main objective this season and nearly all his main players started.

Lemar sealed a straightforward win four minutes from time, after latching on a Kylian Mbappe pass.

There were no signs of a European hangover at Stade Marcel Picot as the Ligue 1 leaders raced into a 1-0 lead after three minutes when Valere Germain's cross deflected off the foot of Nancy defender Badila and wrong-footed Guy N'Dy Assembe. Silva made it 2-0 shortly before halftime when he headed in Thomas Lemar's cross from the left.

Subasic impressed further after 18 minutes when Antony Robic volleyed towards goal from the edge of the box and the Monaco goalkeeper made a good diving save, before Youssouf Hadji fired the rebound over the crossbar.

Lucas Moura smashed a shot off the woodwork and then opened the scoring just after the half-hour mark, before the controversial moment when the hosts went 2-0 up.

Verratti doubled the tally three minutes later with a 25-metre effort while Bastia keeper Jean-Louis Leca was tending to the apparently injured Matuidi.

The goalkeeper ran to protest to the referee but was booked for his troubles.

In the second-half Cavani scored twice, meaning he has now scored 46 goals in 47 games for PSG this season across all competitions.

Monaco fans celebrated as if they'd won the league, while Monaco vice-president Vadim Vasilyev went on to the pitch to applaud them and congratulate his players.

We prefer to think that Verratti should probably have saved this wonder strike for a more opportune time and it was pretty harsh on little Bastia.
