Penn State Beta Theta Pi Members Charged for Timothy Piazza's Death

And Beta Theta Pi International Fraternity said in a statement, "The nature of those charges are incredibly disheartening as the organization and its membership continue to grieve Tim's passing and the pain experienced by his family".

Over 1,000 charges were laid against the students and the fraternity itself, Beta Theta Pi, faces one count of involuntary manslaughter.

On the night of February 2, Piazza engaged in drinking as a part of a hazing ritual known as "The Gauntlet", and his blood alcohol content reached between.28 and.36., according to the report.

Reporter: Investigators say in February the beta theta pi pledge was forced to binge drink before falling head first down a staircase. Video from security cameras inside the Beta Theta Pi frat helped authorities piece together the final hours of Timothy Piazza's life.

"The grand jury finds that... He saw Piazza 'thrashing and making weird movements on the couch" and screamed at the fraternity brothers for help, stressing that Piazza needed to go to the hospital because he could have a concussion. In the wake of his death, the DA has announced more than 850 charges-including involuntary manslaughter, hazing, assault, and furnishing alcohol to minors-against 18 frat members. They did not call 911 until 10:48 a.m.

Once that was complete, the pledges were lined up outside the fraternity house.

The report also said that doctors concluded Piazza suffered from "multiple traumatic brain injuries", including a fractured skull and a lacerated spleen, which resulted in 80 percent of his blood supply in his abdominal cavity.

Penn State president Eric Barron at a news conference called the "alleged details in the grand jury presentment. sickening and hard to understand".

Fraternity members then waited another 42 minutes before calling for emergency help.

Piazza's death led to a number of changes on campus, including a ban on all social activities involving alcohol for the rest of the semester, monitoring at social events to prevent underage and excessive drinking, no hard liquor at events that allow for alcohol, and probation and immediate revocation of a Greek-letter chapter's status if rules are violated. The next morning, he fell down the stairs again and was unconscious when help was finally summoned.

Grand jurors recounted other video footage from just after 5 a.m. showing a prone Piazza, clutching at his sides, as a fraternity member steps twice over his body - once on his way to grab a drink of water and again on his way back to his room. "I just know that these kids' lives are ruined forever and like I'm not sure if everyone in the frat is involved", said Susan McGrory, a Penn State sophomore from Westchester.

"The Penn State Greek community nurtured an environment so permissive of excessive drinking and hazing", a grand jury presentment said.

One member "proceeds to slap Timothy three times in the face".

The fraternity pledge manual said no alcohol could be consumed at the frat house, especially by pledges or minors, and that hazing was prohibited, according to the grand jury report.

"If need be, just tell them what I told you guys, found him behind an away bar the next morning at around 10 a.m., and he was freezing cold, but we made a decision to call 911 instantly, because the kid's health was paramount", a fraternity bro told fellow pledges in a recovered message.

While the charges were being announced for this horrendous incident, Piazza's parents stood by.
