Sam Vokes double secures point for Burnley

West Brom set to make a move for Jermain Defoe

On 20 minutes Vokes did well to turn a deflected George Boyd cross towards goal from in front of the near post, but Ben Foster reacted quickly to save with his feet.

Vokes, like Dyche, would like to wait until survival is confirmed on points before popping the champagne corks, but he praised the character of the Clarets to come back and secure a draw against West Brom, having seen the lead they had established wiped out with two quick goals for the visitors.

Burnley boss Sean Dyche (on survival): "It's very hard at the top level of football without major finance, we did it to a reasonable degree for a club of this size".

Two of management's great over-achievers, Sean Dyche and Tony Pulis, could take varying degrees of satisfaction from a draw that finally burst into life after the interval and all but assured Burnley of remaining in the Premier League next season.

After a forgettable first half, Vokes' 56th-minute opener ignited proceedings at Turf Moor, with the Baggies scoring twice in 12 minutes through Salomon Rondon and Craig Dawson having previously gone almost nine hours without a goal.

It was a similar story at the start of the second half when James Tarkowski thumped a header from an Arfield corner just over the crossbar.

But Burnley never know when they are beaten at Turf Moor and in another storming finish Vokes headed the equaliser five minutes from time to make it all but job done for the courageous Clarets.

Vokes netted the opener after Ashley Barnes was fouled by Jake Livermore, but picked himself up to pull the ball back for his strike partner: "Vokesy was outstanding last week, outstanding again today".

The advantage lasted only 10 minutes, however, as the Baggies responded strongly.

This was Vokes' first-ever Premier League brace.

These are heady times for Burnley supporters, and not just because their despised local rivals Blackburn are in danger of being relegated to the third tier of the game this afternoon.

West Brom had gone eight hours and 51 minutes without scoring before Rondon levelled.

The Baggies scored with their first shot on target of the game (on 66 minutes). Burnley on the Terf Moore already scores from both Chelsea and Everton, and therefore West Brom, who has won only 3 in all 16 guest matches, also being in a protracted crisis, is unlikely to take away three points.
