Facebook removes accounts in fight against fake news

Facebook could face questions over political advertisers using the social network

The ads being run in United Kingdom newspapers, including The Times, The Guardian and Daily Telegraph, provide readers with a list of 10 tips for spotting fake news.

"We've found that if reading an article makes people significantly less likely to share it, that may be a sign that a story has misled people in some way", a company spokesperson told The Guardian. The ads suggest that readers should be "skeptical of headlines", and to "look closely at the URL".

Also implemented is a system that demotes suspicious articles, and stops them from appearing in the News Feed as often.

Facebook has started putting out ads in newspapers to held readers spot fake news.

While a print campaign is just "one vehicle" for combatting the fake news scourge, Myhr said it's a step in the right direction to help improve consumer behavior. The company listed out ten things to look out for in news stories to weed out fake news.

"But with something like Facebook you have a media which is increasingly seen as the most valuable media in an election period but which is totally unregulated".

They're already making progress on that front.

Since the fake news epidemic emerged during the 2016 United States elections, top social media giants Google and Facebook have been promising to take action to curb the phenomenon.

Facebook said in a statement that its technology allows it to identify "inauthentic accounts more easily by identifying patterns of activity - without assessing the content itself".

As part of its initiative in the UK, Facebook has announced that it will be monitoring the repeated posting of the same content or a sharp increase in messaging in order to flag accounts for further scrutiny. Facebook intensified its efforts to stem the spread of misinformation following mounting criticism that the company inadvertently allowed far-right groups to spread lies about Hillary Clinton that may have influenced voters in the US election.

Facebook is expected to play an influential role in the General Election, amid concerns about a lack of regulation. In a report issued last month, Facebook disclosed that it has seen many actions by "false amplifiers" to spread propaganda and politically motivated content.

But skeptics of Facebook remain.
