UK PM's party secures big gains in local polls

Professor Michael Thrasher, an analyst for Sky News, said: "This does put them below what the national opinion polls are now saying".

The ruling Conservative Party seems to be gaining local council seats according to preliminary resul.

Prof Roger Scully of Cardiff University said the Tory threat to Labour's long-standing dominance was "very real", projecting them to win 20 seats.

Voters turned out on Thursday (May 4) to elect thousands of local-level government seats throughout Scotland and across parts of England and Wales, as well as a handful of newly created regional posts. Too many fantastic councillors, who work tirelessly for their communities, lost their seats.

Labour's defeated mayoral candidate in the West Midlands, Sion Simon, said Labour supporters were dissatisfied with the party, even in places they had won.

It also lost Welsh councils Blaenau Gwent and Merthyr Tydfil to independents, as well as Bridgend.

"It is clear that more and more people are getting sick and exhausted of the SNP's obsession with dividing us again".

Many of the Tory council gains - which include areas such as Derbyshire, East Sussex, Norfolk, Gloucestershire, Isle of Wight, Lincolnshire, Warwickshire and Monmouthshire - came at the expense of UKIP, whose vote has collapsed.

And if the party managed to confound the pollsters and win a much higher share of the vote than current polling suggests, they have historically found it hard to translate that support into Westminster seats.

That would mirror a trend predicted in polls for next month's election showing the Conservatives becoming the party of choice for those who reject Scottish independence.

Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron claimed only his party could prevent a Conservative "coronation", despite its failure to make a hoped-for breakthrough in its former South West stronghold.

The Labour leader described the results as "mixed" and insisted they were "closing the gap" on the Conservatives.

The largest party in terms of seats by a considerable margin, the SNP secured nearly a third of all first preferences cast in the local polls while the Tories won just over a quarter.

Ms Davidson said: "I think you have seen in both language and design, the SNP attempt to assimilate the party for Scotland and Scotland for the party".

Labour faces a challenge on a "historic scale" if it is to win the General Election on June 8, Jeremy Corbyn has said, after the party suffered heavy losses in the local council polls.

The SNP won 39 out of 85 seats, just four short of an outright majority, as Labour went from 41 to 31.

Labour lost over 100 seats and three councils, but retained control in the key cities of Cardiff and Swansea.
