Thousands of women march across Venezuela as political crisis deepens

Thousands of women dressed in white marched in Venezuela's capital yesterday to maintain pressure on President Nicolas Maduro, whose authority is being increasingly challenged by protests and deadly unrest. Instead, opposition leaders said they're planning a protest on Monday at the Education Ministry to present arguments against the assembly, and are staging marches across the nation.

"(The process) is not a Constituent, we could hardly go to an absolutely fraudulent process, we Venezuelans will not be part of a fraud", Capriles said.

April in Venezuela continues anti-government protests, which often degenerated into clashes with police.

The death toll since April―when the protests intensified after Maduro's administration and the courts stepped up efforts to undermine the opposition―is at least 36, according to prosecutors, with hundreds more injured.

The last death in Venezuela's unrest, of a 22-year-old man, occurred Friday during looting in impoverished Venezuelan cities hardest hit by a worsening economic crisis. A third person was killed during looting at a shop in the industrial city of Valencia and a motorcyclist died after being struck by a auto trying to swerve away from a protest, the chief prosecutor's office said.

The media reported that students destroyed the statue as they vented their anger with the food shortages, inflation and spiraling crime that have come to define life here.

Maduro supporters also marched against what they called "violence by terrorists", Minister for Women Blanca Eekhout said.
