Trump delaying decision on Paris climate deal

"It's a sign that the president wants to continue to meet with his team. and come to a decision on what's [in] the best interest of the United States", White House press secretary Sean Spicer told reporters on Tuesday.

The core of the Paris deal was an agreement between Xi and then USA president Barack Obama. The deal seeks to reduce greenhouse gases emissions, which are blamed for global warming.

Meanwhile, more than 215 global investors, collectively managing more than $15 trillion in assets, sent a letter of their own today to President Trump and other G20 leaders urging them to support and swiftly implement the climate accord.

Key advisers to President Donald Trump and cabinet officials were due to convene at the White House to resolve an internal debate over whether Trump should keep his campaign promise to pull the United States out of the Paris agreement, according to senior administration officials and several people briefed on the meeting. 'We believe the Paris Agreement provides such a framework'.

A senior administration official said the president's inclination has been to leave the pact, but Ivanka Trump set up a review process to make sure he received information from experts in the public and private sector before a making a decision.

Meanwhile, at a summit in Milan, Italy, focused on climate change and food availability, President Barack Obama defended the Paris agreement earlier Tuesday, saying the U.S. must show leadership and not "sit on the sidelines".

Like Trump, Pruitt has questioned the consensus of climate scientists that man-made carbon emissions are the primary driver of global warming.

Mr Tillerson is a former Exxon executive and has yet to appoint deputies in the State Department on a range of issues including climate change, though has said he thinks climate change is real.

Full withdrawal would roil Washington's allies and seriously undermine global efforts to limit carbon emissions, which the vast majority of experts say are changing the climate in unsafe ways.

"It is clear from the agreement that if you do change your target, you are encouraged to change it in a more ambitious direction", she said. Both men have pressed Trump to stay on board.

The G-7 meeting is expected to be a prime opportunity for world leaders to push Trump to stay in the historic 2015 pact, in which each of almost 200 countries agreed to their own nonbinding cuts or limits in greenhouse gas emissions.

"It is definitely the elephant in the room", a member of one national delegation told AFP on Tuesday.

The announcement pushed back a decision that has sweeping implications for the fate of global efforts to fight climate change - and has drawn intense interest from the worldwide community, corporate lobbyists and environmental organizations.
