Comey writes farewell letter, says he 'will be fine' after firing

Former chief of the Federal Bureau of Investigations James Comey, who was abruptly fired by US President Donald Trump in an nearly unprecedented move that stirred a political tailspin in and outside the US, has finally reacted to his sacking two days after it was shockingly announced by the White House. One of the most persistent revolved around the sequence of events - whether Mr. Trump had chosen to fire Comey, then asked Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein to write a memo justifying the move.

Democrats have said the FBI's work will now be hopelessly tainted and demanded a special prosecutor akin to those appointed during Richard Nixon's Watergate scandal or the run-up to Bill Clinton's impeachment.

"But that's not really the entire question here", Fishman continued. Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that while he couldn't be certain the request triggered Comey's dismissal, he said he believed the FBI "was breathing down the neck of the Trump campaign and their operatives and this was an effort to slow down the investigation".

Deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said on "Good Morning America" today that she was "not aware" of Rosenstein's contemplating his resignation.

Comey, who had been leading the FBI's probe into potential ties between Trump campaign staff members and Russian Federation, testified in March that the Justice Department had "no information" to support Trump's wiretapping allegation. At the time Comey said it was "a big counter-intelligence and criminal investigation", Feinstein said.

President Donald Trump defended his firing of FBI Director James Comey on Wednesday, asserting in a flurry of tweets that both Democrats and Republicans "will be thanking me". The FBI had also recently issued subpoenas to force associates of Trump's former national security adviser Michael Flynn to testify before a grand jury.

Attorney General Sessions announced in March that he would recuse himself from matters relating to the investigation.

Bacon added that he does think the administration should have handled the notification better so Comey did not learn of the firing from television reports.

The firing came not long after Comey had requested additional resources for the investigation, according to US officials, although the Justice Department disputed that.

When Mr Comey refused, Mr Trump and his aides considered that an act of insubordination and it was one of the catalysts to Mr Trump's s decision this week to fire the Federal Bureau of Investigation director, the officials said.

A White House spokeswoman on Wednesday dismissed the idea that Trump had tried to intimidate the FBI investigators, attorneys or others involved in its counterintelligence investigation. The White House said the search for a director will begin immediately. Outraged Democrats called for an independent investigation into the Trump campaign's possible ties to Russia's election interference, and a handful of prominent Republican senators left open that possibility.

But critics say the 52-year-old Harvard graduate, with a reputation as straight-shooting and non-partisan, has been sucked into providing cover for Mr Trump to push out a man he desperately wanted rid of. The FBI has not confirmed that Comey ever made those assurances to the president.

A congressional source said on Wednesday Comey, days before being fired, told lawmakers he had sought more resources for the agency's Russian Federation probe.

The Trump administration said on Tuesday Comey was sacked because of his handling of the Clinton email probe.

Before Tuesday, only one FBI director had been fired in the bureau's century-long history.
