UK's Labour Party stung by early leak of election platform

Prime Minister Theresa May during a campaign visit to York

Brown said May called the election on a "single issue", to strengthen her hand in negotiations to leave the European Union, but complained "we don't know what her hand is".

"We've just concluded our joint meeting of the shadow cabinet and the National Executive and we've discussed our manifesto for the general election", Corbyn said. "We've amended a draft document in the most informed, interesting and sensible debate".

The Labour leader, who did not answer questions on how a draft version of the manifesto had been leaked to the media on Wednesday, left the central London venue after about four hours of discussions.

"I think we are going to see a manifesto which is progressive and for the people of this county".

Labour's joint election coordinator, Andrew Gwynne, said the leak should be used as an "opportunity" to put forward the party's "vision of a different kind of Britain, a fairer Britain, a more equal Britain, a Britain on the side of the many, not the few".

Former Prime Minister Gordon Brown made a plea for United Kingdom voters to elect Labour Party "champions" in the June 8 general election to fight for manufacturers' interests as Britain departs the European Union.

That jars with the centrist pro-business Labour movement championed by Blair and then Brown, and underlines the ideological schism in a party which is divided about its future path and struggling to retain support among its core voters.

Concerns were understood to have been raised in the meeting about how various drafts of the manifesto had been leaked to the media, with the leader's office and other senior figures blaming each other for the breach. Several newspapers and broadcasters had details of the policies overnight, including the Guardian, the Daily Mirror and the Daily Telegraph.
