White House Remains on Defensive After Firing FBI Director

James Comey

The Senate intelligence committee said it expects McCabe to appear at a hearing Thursday on current and projected national security threats.

White House officials say Trump had been contemplating firing Comey since last November's presidential election. When asked by Senator Angus King of ME about press secretary Sean Spicer's statement that the probe was "one of the smallest things on the plate of the FBI", McCabe responded that he would not characterize it thusly.

Ms Wright said there's now a call for a special prosecutor to be put in charge of the FBI investigation into the Trump-Russia connection.

In his first in-person statement to the press since he fired now-former FBI Director James Comey, President Donald Trump did not mince words.

Sounds to me like McCabe's already got his vacation spot planned out. They suggested Trump was persuaded to take the step by Justice Department officials and a scathing memo, written by Rosenstein, criticizing the director's role in the Clinton investigation.

Before this, the president had met privately with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. That memo said Comey's public comments about a case in which no charges were filed hurt the reputation of the Federal Bureau of Investigation and affected the Justice Department. And Trump's action left the fate of the Russian Federation probe deeply uncertain.

McCabe also challenged this claim and said that Comey's dismissal will not impede the investigation.

"I can not comment on any conversations that the Director may have had with the president", McCabe said. Warner asked McCabe if he would commit to informing the committee of any political interference in the Russian Federation investigation, and McCabe responded, "I absolutely do".

President Trump has also sacked Attorney General Sally Yates after she refused to implement his travel ban and his vowed "see you in court" to judges who have opposed his moves. The administration paired the letter with a scathing review by Rosenstein, the recently confirmed deputy attorney general, of how Comey handled the investigation into Democrat Hillary Clinton's email practices, including his decision to hold a news conference announcing its findings and releasing "derogatory information" about Clinton.

If this reason for dismissal is true, it means that Democrats have the proof that they would need to call for the impeachment of Trump. Trump was mad at Comey for eventually going easy on Hillary Clinton - although he was pleased Comey initially implicated her in the email server issue - while turning his attention to probing the Trump campaign's links to Russian Federation.

A senior official who spoke to DailyMail.com on Wednesday afternoon admitted that there was nothing in the protocol keeping Trump from calling Comey, though - if he'd wanted to.

Video shows Deputy Attorney General Rosenstein arriving on Capitol Hill to meet with Senate Intel leadership. "Very simple. He was not doing a good job", Trump said.

Justice Department officials identified two of the contenders as Adam Lee and Michael Anderson, who run the FBI's field offices in Richmond, Virginia, and Chicago, respectively.

White House and other US officials insisted on anonymity to disclose private conversations.

Meanwhile, a farewell letter from Comey that circulated among friends and colleagues said he does not plan to dwell on the decision to fire him or on "the way it was executed". President Bill Clinton dismissed William Sessions amid allegations of ethical lapses in 1993.

Huckabee Sanders said Wednesday, 'No matter how you fire someone it's never an easy process, so he felt like following protocol was the best thing to do'.
