Comey infuriated Trump with refusal to preview Senate testimony: Aides

Trump's rumored visit comes amid a stunning termination of Comey as director, a move the president had been considering since November, Sanders told "CBS This Morning" on Thursday. Democratic Sen. Al Franken, of Minnesota, called Sessions' involvement a "complete betrayal" of his commitment, and Sen. Ron Wyden, of OR, called for his resignation.

"A change of leadership at the FBI may slow the investigation in the short run, but the political backlash against the firing will ensure that the Russian Federation investigation will stay on the media front pages for months to come", he noted.

"There's no collusion between me and my campaign and the Russians", he declared Thursday. But as demonstrated by Comey's departure three years into his term, that doesn't keep presidents from legally firing them.

The letter is the first time Mr Comey's thoughts on his abrupt dismissal by Mr Trump have been aired in public.

Comey had said during a congressional hearing in March that he saw no evidence to support that claim.

The firing - which shocked much of Washington, including many of Trump's senior aides - came days after Comey asked Congress for more resources to pursue the investigation, which had stalled, according to officials briefed on the matter.

In an interview with NBC's Lester Holt, Mr Trump slammed Mr Comey as a "showboat" attention-seeker who had lost the confidence of the president and the agency he led. "I said, I will see him", he said.

The firing has prompted Democrats to amplify their calls for an independent investigation of the Russian Federation case.

The White House on Thursday continued to defend its dismissal of the Federal Bureau of Investigation chief and denied it tried to put the responsibility on Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein's memo for the abrupt removal. Rosenstein had prepared an assessment establishing the grounds to sack Comey.

A timeline of the decision compiled by the White House said Mr Trump was "strongly inclined" to dismiss Mr Comey before the Justice Department meeting, but not that he had already made the decision. "His involvement in Comey's firing doesn't just undermine, it eviscerates the belief in his impartiality or credibility on this". Her suggestion: Appoint a special prosecutor.

While 38 percent of Americans said Trump's action was appropriate, 54 percent answered that it was not appropriate. And it certainly won't change Comey's ouster.

As of Wednesday evening, Justice Department officials said they anticipated McCabe would testify - although they had just that day interviewed candidates to possibly replace him and expected to make a decision soon.

The letters, from Attorney General Jeff Sessions and Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, faulted Mr Comey for his handling of the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's private email server. In defending the decision, officials leaned heavily on a memo from Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general, that criticized Comey's handling of the Clinton investigation. Some of Trump's fellow Republicans called his dismissal of Comey troubling.
