North Korea accuses US, South Korea of assassination attempt

North Korea accuses United States, South Korea of bio-chemical assassination attempt

Pyongyang presented extensive details but offered no concrete proof.

The U.S. House of Representatives voted Thursday to impose new sanctions on North Korea.

The CIA and Seoul's Intelligence Services have "hatched a vicious plot" involving unspecified "biochemical substances" to kill the hermit state's young leader during public ceremonial events in Pyongyang, the Ministry of State Security said. They gave names of people supposedly involved in the plot, dates on which key characters communicated with each other and the amounts of money that allegedly changed hands.

North Korean ministry claimed that the government was made aware of a 2014 assassination attempt against Kim that was to be carried out by an "ideologically corrupted and bribed" citizen who reportedly worked closely with Russian operatives to take out Kim, ABC News reported.

It said Kim received two payments of $20,000 and a "satellite transmitter-receiver".

The North Korean Security Ministry alleged that a North Korean native working in Russian Federation as a lumberjack was "bribed", Yonhap reports, by the Central Intelligence Agency and NIS to kill Kim Jong-un. The last date that appears in the North Korean statement is "early May", when "Kim" is supposed to receive "necessary equipment" via a "liaison centre" he has set up with his funding.

Pyongyang accuses US and South Korea spy agencies of attempt to assassinate country's leader with biochemical weapons. It has described regular US-South Korea military exercises as plans to "decapitate" its leadership.

A week ago, North Korea conducted its second failed ballistic missile test in two weeks.

The North Korean Ministry of State Security released an official statement in which it called both the US Central Intelligence Agency and South Korea's Intelligence Service a "hotbed of evils in the world".

"Yet Chinese and American analysts alike point out the likely limits of China's willingness to pressure North Korea to the extent the Trump administration desires", he said.

A report emerged from the state-run North Korean media on Tuesday claiming that they are "close" to nuclear war with the United States.

That was the latest salvo in the Trump administration's push to get the global community to intensify diplomatic and economic pressure on North Korea to dismantle its nuclear weapons program before it can pose a direct threat to the American mainland.
