Mummies Discovered In Minya, Egypt

Egypt discovers new necropolis in Minya, first in area

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a necropolis containing at least 17 mummies.

Egyptian Antiquities Minister Khaled el-Enany speaks to the media on Saturday in front of mummies following their discovery in catacombs in the Touna el-Gabal district of the Minya province, central Egypt.

They also found a golden sheet and two papyri in Demotic, an ancient Egyptian script, as well as a number of sarcophogi made of limestone and clay.

The Touna el-Gabal site dates back to the Greco-Roman period between the third century BC and third century AD.

Pointing to the edges of the necropolis where legs and feet of other mummies could be seen, the minister said that the find "will be much bigger, " as work is now in only a preliminary stage.

"I believe and trust that the most interesting things, which will bring the entire world's attention to Egypt and improve its image is any news related to antiquities", Mr Anani said.

During excavation work in the area, which neighbours the birds and animals necropolis, a mission from Cairo University stumbled this week upon the cachette - a term that describes an unmarked burial site used to house multiple mummies and protect them from looting.

The site is close to an ancient animal cemetery.

In April, eight mummies were uncovered inside a 3,500-year-old tomb in the southern city of Luxor.

Chairman of Cairo University, Gaber Nassar, said "we will continue to fund the antiquities discoveries in Touna el-Gabal district, and turn it into an important center at the tourist map of Egypt".

"Antiquities are the soft power that distinguishes Egypt", Enany said.
