Texas Senate Passes Anti-Transgender Legislation

Texas set to pass bill to detain migrant families in one-time prisons

The bill passed the Texas Senate 24-7, and shamefully four Democratic senators voted in support of this bill: Senators Hinojosa, Lucio Jr., Uresti, and West. HRC condemns the passage of this bill through the Senate and calls on House leadership to stop SB2095 from further consideration in the House.

When transgender wrestler Mack Beggs won a girls' state championship, his victory drew jeers and complaints that his steroid therapy treatment had given him an unfair advantage against girls who risked injury just by getting on the mat with him.

It was brought by Coppell lawyer Jim Baudhuin, and alleged that the UIL was not adhering to its own policies on use of steroids.

The Texas House has voted down a bill that would have put new accountability measures on police departments reporting when an officer kills a civilian.

House Bill 122, also known as the "raise the age" bill, would raise the age of criminal responsibility in Texas from 17 to 18, meaning people would be treated as adults in the criminal justice system only after turning 18. It would let the state board that oversees high school sports disqualify those student-athletes if that board says their prescribed steroid use affects safety or fair play. "We need to make sure they're free to participate just like everybody else".

Sadly, the bill has already passed in the state Senate and is expected to go before the House any day now.

HB 2899 would have nullified parts of nondiscrimination ordinances in several Texas cities that have been in place for decades to protect certain classes of persons, including transgender residents, from discrimination in public accommodations. "Transgender people are no different". Recently adopted University Interscholastic League rules required Beggs to compete as a girl, the gender listed on his birth certificate.

Beggs wants to wrestle next year, when he will be a senior.

Whitmire declined to comment on Dutton's "raise the age" bill Wednesday but later said killing any of his bills won't hurt him personally.

"SB 1018 benefits the two for-profit prison corporations by legitimizing their operations in Texas at the expense of mothers and children", said State Sen. Those protections are meant to allow them to use public bathrooms that match their gender identities.

"I've got important bills that are not going to make it, and other members do as well, but there are other bills that got through the House and they're over in the Senate now and we'll depend on them to do their thing and get them back to us", said Workman.

Research also shows that 17-year-olds are less likely to commit new crimes if they are rehabilitated instead of being locked away in the adult system. It establishes criminal and civil penalties for local government entities and law enforcement that don't comply with immigration laws and detention requests, the governor's office said.
