Gorka Izagirre climbs to victory in eighth stage of Giro d'Italia

Blockhaus - Britain's Geraint Thomas hit out at organisers on Sunday after he and Sky team-mate Mikel Landa fell victim to a crash caused by a police motorbike that virtually ended their Giro d'Italia hopes.

That belonged to the stationary police bike that was not parked far enough off the road and clipped the Dutchman, sending him into the peloton.

Team Sky's Thomas, who was in second place at the start of the day, finished over five minutes behind the victorious Colombian.

Defending champion Vincenzo Nibali was also dealt a big knock when he cracked on the final climb, a punishing 13.6-km ascent up the Blockhaus.

Yates finished nearly five minutes behind Quintana on the day, while Thomas was slightly further back as both saw their hopes end.

Although he battled on the climb to finish third at 24 seconds behind Quintana and move up to third overall, trailing the Colombian by 51 seconds, his race nearly ended too.

"I'm a bit angry at the minute and need to work out what to do tomorrow", Thomas was reported as saying by BBC Sport.

Quintana leads second-placed Pinot of France by 28 seconds in the overall standings and third-placed Dumoulin of The Netherlands by 30 seconds.

The Movistar rider finished 24 seconds ahead of Frenchman Thibaut Pinot and Dutchman Tom Dumoulin to take the race lead from Luxembourg's Bob Jungels.

Welshman Thomas stayed down for several minutes before being able to continue and later revealed his shoulder had "popped out".

"We were all racing for the bottom of the climb then next thing I know, someone in front of me hits the motorbike and you go down".

Thomas added: "I had felt good and then I crashed and my race was over".

Quintana was in better spirits and said: "I showed that I'm happy with my legs and the legs of my teammates. That's most important for now".

Having started the day in second place, he now finds himself 5min 14sec behind Quintana in 17th.

Quintana dedicated his victory to 2011 Giro champion Michele Scarponi, who died after a collision with a van while training last month.

Stage 10 is a 40-km time trial and will see another shake up in the GC.
