Portugal wins Eurovision Song Contest for first time

Portugal's Salvador Sobral performs with the song

Portugal has won the Eurovision Song Contest for the first time in the competition's history.

They will begin preparations for hosting the 2018 Eurovision Song Contest this week. At the end of the day, when all the votes were tallied, it was Portugal who were crowned the victor of the Eurovision Song Contest 2017 with 758 points.

Salvador is a 27-year-old Portugese singer who placed seventh in Idolos, the country's version of Pop Idol.

"It was hard to sing every night until midnight, but it was worth it", he said recently.

"I think it's a very attractive song. That's (local soccer star) Cristiano Ronaldo".

Firebrace was selected by the broadcaster SBS and Australia's Eurovision delegation to perform; Nissen competed for her entry by winning the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, a national music competition in Denmark which is used to select the Eurovision entrant.

Sobral sang his Amar Pelos Dois (Love For Both) in a high, clear tenor accompanied by quiet strings and a piano.

Speaking on winning, he said: "We live in a world of disposable music and I think this could be a victory for people who make music that actually means something".

"If he wins that contest, and because of this Hungary would be the host of the next contest, then it would be really something", Adam Schonberger, a Hungarian Jew who runs Aurora, an organization that encourages dialogue and cooperation between Roma and Jews, told JTA ahead of the contest.

Russian singer Yulia Samoylova performed in Crimea again on Tuesday, coinciding with the first Eurovision semi-final.

"When we are very good, we're the best of the best".

Salvador Sobral's Amar Pelos Dois was the stand-out performance of the night.

Prime Minister Antonio Costa followed the lead with a tweet of his own.

Portugal's performer, Salvador Sobral, offered up the following when asked about his win for Portugal.

The previous best Portuguese Eurovision ranking was 6th place, back in 1996.

Sobral said he would be delighted if its Eurovision triumph had some impact, however small, on how music is made, produced and marketed.

The feeling was never more mutual than Sunday afternoon, when Sobral was embraced by his countrymen and women upon arrival, as hundreds physically swarmed him at the airport concourse, chanting his name while being escorted by police.

Vying for first place is Portugal's Salvador Sobral, performing a jazz-style ballad written by sister Luisa.

"This is music with content, an emotional song with a attractive lyrical message and harmony - things people are not used to listening these days".
