US institutions "under assault': Ex National Intelligence head"

On ABC News' This Week on Sunday morning, Clapper said that Russia's "first objective" was to "sow doubt, discord, and dissension in this country" during the 2016 election.

Citing Russian influence in the USA election, Clapper told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union" that outside forces were responsible for weakening the US government.

In an interview with ABC's This Week, Clapper said that Russian Federation likely sees the firing of FBI Director James Comey as "another victory on the scoreboard for them" because "the lead of the investigation about potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign has been removed".

Clapper said Sunday that he spoke with Comey prior to the dinner while at an event at Federal Bureau of Investigation headquarters in Washington.

'People are very upset about the way he was treated, ' Clapper said.

Clapper and Europol say the scope of the problem may become bigger Monday when people switch on their computers.

United States President Donald Trump has denied allegations of any type of collusion between his campaign officials and Russian operatives.

While serving as DNI chief from 2010 to 2017, Clapper said he left it up to the FBI director 'whether, when and what to tell me about any counter-intelligence investigations they may have under way'. Chuck Schumer is more fallout from Trump's firing last week of FBI Director James Comey — and the evolving reasons for the dismissal.

'I did not have any evidence.

What Trump glommed onto is the fact that 'there was no reporting in that intelligence community assessment about political collusion, ' Clapper explained. I did not know about the investigation, ' Clapper said again on Sunday.

At that subcommittee hearing, former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, whom Trump fired in January for refusing to defend his initial temporary ban on visitors from several Muslim-majority countries and suspension of the entry of Syrian refugees, declined to answer the question of whether there was evidence of collusion publicly; in her answer, she also noted that Clapper had been unaware of the FBI investigation.

'I can only speculate why that's so.

"What's unfolded now, here, the leader of the - the lead of the investigation about potential collusion between Russian Federation and the Trump campaign has been removed".

"The developments of the past week are very bothersome, very disturbing to me", Clapper said on CNN's "State of the Union" on Sunday. "And I don't know of any evidence to it so I can't refute it and I can't confirm it".
