Browns' Myles Garrett Receives Advice From Hall of Famer Bruce Smith

No. 1 overall draft pick Myles Garrett is anxious to get his hands on Ben Roethlisberger this upcoming season, and the Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback is ready for the challenge.

It was Hall of Famer Bruce Smith that opened his eyes when the 2 watched film together earlier this year.

1 overall draft pick Myles Garrett revealed Saturday that he received a critique from National Football League all-time sack leader Bruce Smith.

"I don't think you guys could probably relate to the amount of attention that this young man or anybody who's going to be a No. 1 draft pick has", Brown said.

"I kind of laughed a little bit", Garrett said.

Garrett said he's excited for the opportunity with the Browns and isn't putting any more pressure on himself, despite being the top pick in the draft.

"I just don't think the 160-carat tweets and the headlines that get taken out of context often should reflect who the person is".

Brown explained they spent a half day with four or five of their top-rated prospects before the draft, and Garrett was one of them.

"Did you see that guy come off the edge that one time today?" "Holy smoke. Athletic, fast, big, fun". "He is very talented". He is going to have to earn the right to be what we think he can be. We're looking to get after him.

The Browns new defensive end recorded three tackles, a sack, one tackle for a loss, and two quarterback hurries in the overtime win, but the Buffalo Bills legend saw plenty for Garrett to work on. Smith, while not against the Browns' rookie, has some strong criticism. "He is just trying to teach me the tricks that I can get off the ball faster and do it even better".

"What I am trying to do right now is to get them to understand the coaching that is here and what they are going to come into and truly have them understand that they are just a piece of the puzzle and that they have to come in and truly embrace the veteran guys and understand how they do it", he said. "If I learn that and just keep on practicing that, I'll perform at a high level". Why should I be afraid of saying those kinds of things?

"I got to run with them first", Garrett said. He did not practice because he had not signed a participation agreement.

The media, Brown pointed out, would rather highlight the one or two players on a team that are causing trouble off the field than the dozens of players who are devoting part of their free time to giving back to the community. "I'm not anxious about what people expect from me or what they think I am going to do. I'm not anxious about anything but being the best football player and person I can be".
