Concussion spotter couldn't pull Crosby for hitting boards

Concussion spotter couldn't pull Crosby for hitting boards

Sullivan also added context to his earlier comments by spelling out the process by which the NHL's coaches are apprised of a player's status in relation to the league's concussion protocol.

According to NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly, the league's concussion spotter determined the incident didn't match the criteria necessary to pull a player from the game.

An NHL concussion spotter did not find Sidney Crosby's headfirst slide into the boards as a valid reason to remove him from the Pittsburgh Penguins' Game 6 against the Washington Capitals. So is the fact that Crosby came back to the game and played his usual robust style and looked very sharp in setting up a goal by Jake Guentzel late in the game.

"Nobody feels good about our game tonight", Pens superstar captain Sidney Crosby told reporters.

"I just got tripped up there going pretty fast and went into the boards pretty awkwardly". The concussion was Crosby's fourth.

Washington's early pressure was rewarded when Burakovsky doubled the lead at 6:36 of the second after forcing a turnover by Ron Hainsey.

The Capitals appeared on the verge of another exit at the hands of the Penguins going into the third period of Game 5.

With nearly the entire team back from last year's Stanley Cup run, the Penguins have plenty of experience to draw on, especially when it comes to playing with their backs against the wall. Concussions and their long-term implications are among the hottest-button issues in sports.

He did not come out of Game 6 on Monday night. So why is the NHL's concussion spotting protocol so limited in what it can or cannot do when a player has a hit like this on the ice?

The Capitals have spent the better part of the season insisting this time, things will be different. He reported no symptoms.

"There shouldn't be any wondering about it", Crosby said.

But let's read the NHL's policy a little more.

The protocol states that "identification and removal of Players who require an acute evaluation for possible concussion pursuant to this Protocol is a Club level responsibility", and that Central and In-Arena Spotters assist with that process.

The NHL revamped its policies entering this season by implementing a staff of Central League Spotters, positioned in the NHL's Player Safety Room in NY, who can remove a player if he displays any symptom or sign of a concussion. Even if he's an MVP-caliber player with a history of concussions. One of those visible signs is "slow to get up". "Ice" as compared to "boards" is in there for a reason.

Blank or vacant look? "He probably gets angry when I talk about him". That's a blink of the eye in your day.

For a Game 7 of this magnitude, there's no telling what product each team will put on the ice.

And then you read further. "You play seven periods of hockey, wear and tear just gets you". "Ice" has been found to be a predictor of concussions - "boards" has not been". "And so you shouldn't restrict your spotters".

After the game, Crosby said he was evaluated for a concussion, saying, "Yep".

But there's a flaw here, at least one. The Pittsburgh superstar has a history of head injuries, yet he returned to playoff hockey - where the referees swallow their whistles and let "hockey plays" happen with aplomb - to try to win another Stanley Cup.

The Senators faced Capitals' backup Philipp Grubauer in the third meeting and while he gave up goals to Chris Ryan, Chris Kelly and Zack Smith, Condon made 31 saves in a 3-0 shutout. The impact could be on Crosby's future - and not on the ice.
