Jilted Indian lover rapes, kills ex-girlfriend, police say

An Indian activist holds a model of a foetus during a protest against abortion in New Delhi

"Two persons, Sumit and Vikas, have been arrested in this connection", Malik said, adding that both were sent to two-day police remand by a court on Saturday.

He said the shocking incident was a grim reminder of how the law-and-order situation in the state has deteriorated under the Manohar Lal Khattar-led government.

Police said the attackers mutilated her private parts after the rape and ran a vehicle over her face to prevent identification.

A 10-year-old girl is now undergoing treatment after being raped for months by her stepfather in Rohtak, the same area where the 23-year-old woman's mutilated body was found.

"Hang the rapists", said the victim's parents after they were informed by the police about their daughter's brutal rape and murder.

After that the accused took her to a deserted place and gang-raped her.

More gory details of Nirbhaya like gangrape and murder of a young Dalit woman from Sonipat emerged on Sunday, while her family alleged that their plea to police for help prior to the killing went unheeded.

According to the ANI reports, the post-mortem report has indicted that victim's esophagus has been missing and gnawing effects were seen over the chest. The victim had allegedly refused the marriage proposal following which the accused took revenge. The brutality of the case has sparked comparison with the Nirbhaya case.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi expressed deep shock and outrage over the brutal gang rape, murder and mutilation of the body of the victim.

Local reports state her ex-boyfriend, Sumit Kumar, whose age is unknown, is accused of carrying out the evil attack with six other men.

She was taken by auto to the nearby city of Rohtak, about 66 kilometers (41 miles) northeast of the capital Delhi, where the attack took place.

The victim was living with her mother and brother and used to work in a private medicine company.

The fate of a 10-year-old girl who fell pregnant after reportedly being raped by her stepfather lies in the hands of an Indian court, which will decide whether she can have an abortion or be forced to deliver the child.

She said Haryana's BJP government is clearly responsible for the "deteriorating" situation of violence against women and has "failed" to protect women despite tall claims of "beti padhao, beti bachao" campaign, which has remained only on paper.
