Former official says she warned White House about Flynn

Graham takes shot at Trump in Russia hearingMore

Yates testified at a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing that focused primarily on Flynn, and did not shed much light on other aspects of investigations of allegations that Russian Federation meddled in the 2016 US election and whether there was collusion between President Donald Trump's campaign and Moscow.

Asked about it, Yates said answering the question would require revealing classified information.

Separately Monday, former Obama officials said that Obama had raised general concerns about Flynn with Trump and had told the incoming president there were better people for the national security post.

Commenting on this conversation on Fox news, President Donald Trump blamed the Obama administration for not vetting Flynn.

Mr Pence said in January that Mr Flynn denied those calls involved sanctions placed on Russian Federation by the Obama administration in response to its election meddling.

The first warning came from President Obama to President-elect Donald Trump on November 10, that is, 48 hours from his election and during their first meeting. By lying to Vice President Mike Pence about his involvement with the Russians, Flynn set himself up to "be blackmailed by the Russians", Yates said. He built a close relationship a year ago with then-candidate Trump and became a frequent Trump campaign surrogate before assuming a brief tenure as national security advisor.

Trump said in a press conference three days after Flynn resigned, however, that when he looked at the information provided to him about Flynn's conversations with Kislyak, "I said, 'I don't think he did anything wrong". "And that includes investigating the nature of any links between individuals associated with the Trump campaign and the Russian government - and whether there was any coordination between the campaign and Russia's efforts".

The tweet itself came after former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper testified before a Senate Judiciary subcommittee hearing that he was not aware of any evidence of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation. All the committees are led by Republicans. Pence vouched for Flynn in television interviews, using information he's said came from the national security adviser.

Another claimed former Acting Attorney General Sally Yates "said nothing but old news" during her Senate testimony earlier in the day.

Flynn had previously held a position in the former administration, but was sacked from his position as head of the defense intelligence agency.

In fact, she told lawmakers on Capitol Hill Monday she didn't know about the travel ban when she first told McGahn about Flynn, but rather learned about it from media reports.

Former acting attorney general Sally Yates told a Senate panel Monday she warned the White House that Flynn "essentially could be blackmailed" by Russian Federation more than two weeks before he was sacked.

"General Flynn was given the highest security clearance by the Obama administration", he said.
