Police chief shot in upstate NY; suspect barricaded, cops say

New York Police Chief Shot At Domestic Call

Police have not revealed whether Bostick was shot by an officer, or if his death was caused by a self inflicted injury.

According to a law enforcement source, Town of Montgomery Police Chief Arnold "Butch" Amthor was shot and is now at St. Luke's Hospital in Newburgh.

A suspect opened fire on police officers investigating a domestic incident in Maybrook Tuesday morning, sending a police chief to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the shoulder.

The suspect remains barricaded inside a home and streets in the area are closed while the standoff situation continues.

The subject, who had barricaded himself in an Abbey Ave. residence, had kept multiple police departments at bay for most of Tuesday until the Special Operations Unit went in to the 3 floor apartment at 2:30 p.m. and found the male suspect dead.

The identity of the victim also was confirmed by the Montgomery supervisors.

The Associated Press reported Amthor was shot while responding to a domestic disturbance. The chief was said to be conscious and talking when he was taken to the hospital.

Orange County District Attorney David Hoovler says 28-year-old Anthony Bostick was killed by a police officer in a shooting that appears justified.

Neuhaus said the shooting "serves as a reminder of the dangers of police work and how deserving of our support and encouragement law enforcement is". Police surrounded the home for several hours.

The village of Maybrook is mostly in the town of Montgomery and partly in the town of Hamptonburgh, south of Interstate 84.
