With drama aplenty, Netflix and 'Okja' debut in Cannes

People evacuate the Festival Palace after French police found a suspect package

"Netflix has a second film in competition at Cannes - The Meyerowitz Stories" from Noah Baumbach which screens on Sunday.

However, while the company appeared to consider an alternative release strategy, the Cannes festival organizers made a decision to resolve the situation by allowing the company a free pass for this year.

The snafu followed some heat for Okja during the Cannes jury press conference earlier in the week.

Netflix has long craved the prestige of major film festival and awards season honors, but cinema purists have pushed back, saying the streaming giant's inclusion in an event like Cannes sets a risky precedentĀ since the company's films are primarily distributed online rather than on the big screen. Director Joon-Ho Bong is a master at blending genres after expertly mixing comedy and terror in his dystopian "Snowpiercer" and South Korean monster movie "The Host".

He said he could not imagine "the Palme d'Or nor any other prize being given to a film, and then not being able to see that film on a large screen".

This morning's screening of Okja in the festival's main Palais theater got off to a rocky start, beginning with a late start due to heightened security measures including airport-style metal detectors and intensive bag searches.

Whilst some of the further reaches of Okja's wild abandon don't always feel smoothly part of the whole, it's a very small price to pay for the nearly anarchic joy that is often on screen. Netflix Movie Okja was stopped only a few minutes after it started, as the audience started booing.

The Telegraph's Robbie Collin wrote: "Cannes making an A+ case for the primacy of the cinema experience this AM by projecting the first ten mins of Okja in the wrong aspect ratio".

A statement from the Cannes Film Festival said: "This incident was entirely the responsibility of the Festival's technical service, which offers its apologies to the director and his team, to the producers and the audience".

Bong Joon Ho is one of the greatest directors working today. Boos also erupted the film's restarted, however, there was also cheers and applause in response.

Okja, touted as the 21st century E.T. And he takes it right to where it needs to go in the final act, not shying away from showing the truth in the real world, which is the key message in Okja. (The Cannes audience, who saw the film with two sets of subtitles, appreciated this.) At one point, the gang tosses a bag of marbles at their pursuers and watches them fall like dominoes as John Denver's "Annie's Song" plays, for some reason.

Swinton, a co-producer on "Okja" who has served on the Cannes jury twice, said thousands of "the most handsome and esoteric films" are screened at Cannes but never get seen in cinemas, and defended the US company for giving the directorfree reinn on such a big budget film.
