Trump heads to Israel in possible first arrival from Saudi

As President Donald Trump became the first sitting US president to visit the hallowed Western Wall on Monday, it remained unclear whether his administration was changing longstanding USA policy by declaring the wall's location to be Israel, versus Jerusalem.

U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, speaking to reporters onboard Air Force One, said the U.S. could provide clarifications to Israel about the disclosure but said, "I don't know that there's anything to apologize for".

"The wall is part of Jerusalem", he said, declaring an undeniable fact accepted by all sides. The U.S. considers the status of Jerusalem unresolved and subject to negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians.

The President said a prayer at the Wall and then wrote a small note and placed it in a crack in the Wall, as is customary when visiting the site that is one of the holiest in the Jewish faith.

Trump's daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner, who are observant Jews, joined the president and his wife.

The visit is the second of three stops on the President's schedule aimed at highlighting the importance of the world's three largest monotheistic religions.

Israel occupied east Jerusalem and the West Bank in 1967 in moves never recognised by the worldwide community. For this reason, US officials refuse to say that the wall is part of Israel.

Israel regards the whole of Jerusalem as its capital, while the Palestinians claim the east as their capital. The Palestinians see east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

The worldwide community does not recognise Israeli sovereignty over Jerusalem and countries maintain their embassies in Tel Aviv. During the campaign, Trump pledged to move the embassy to Jerusalem, but has since walked back that promise.

After Trump landed in Tel Aviv, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed "hope that one day an Israeli prime minister will be able to fly from Tel Aviv to Riyadh". An Israeli TV station quoted an American as telling the Israelis that the wall is not in Israeli territory, enraging Trump's Israeli hosts.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer, later asked about McMaster's comments, said "It's clearly in Jerusalem".

Various reports, quoting anonymous officials, have said Trump did share classified information with Russian diplomats about the threat posed by the Islamic State group, and several have said that information came from Israeli intelligence.

But hours later, Nikki Haley, Trump's United Nations ambassador, asserted that the wall is part of Israel. "So we tell them how you are great, and they love you", she said.

Access to much of the walled Old City, which is divided into four "quarters" - Muslim, Christian, Armenian and Jewish - was shut down on Monday ahead of Trump's visit.

It is widely assumed that Israel would retain control over the site under a potential peace deal.

The Wall sits at the base of a plateau which Jews call the Temple Mount and Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary.

The competing claims sometimes spill over into violence, and the US has withheld recognition of Israeli control of the area until there is a deal.

Trump has pitched himself as a "mediator, an arbitrator or a facilitator" to help both sides to reach a lasting peace settlement and has resisted laying out specific conditions for a peace deal.

Israelis celebrate the "reunification" of Jerusalem in 1967 as a national holiday.

Trump will have visited significant centres of Islam, Judaism and Christianity by the end of his trip, a point that his aides say bolsters his argument that the fight against Islamist militancy is a battle between "good and evil".
