Indianapolis 500: Alonso mania takes center state

Marco Andretti reacts during qualifications for the Indianapolis

With the flick of a wrist, Sage Karam reveals an ink-stained reminder of Indy.

He recommends watching the alcohol intake because you can get dehydrated fast. "What'd your dad say?" friend and IndyCar driver Marco Andretti asked.

Boles said the speedway will keep fans informed of any weather issues and will alert attendees using the big screens should any severe weather come through.

But the inexplicable often becomes the norm in racing, and during a 500-mile day, chances are that something will go awry as Herta has learned over the years. Until then, Karam figures a tattoo of the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway wing-and-wheel logo on the inside of his right wrist will have to do.

"There have been two very successful Formula One drivers who were world champions who have raced at Indianapolis, but they raced for an entire season", Cheever said, referring to Emerson Fittapaldi and Nigel Mansell.

"The way everything happened in 2011, I had to deal with it all immediately", he says.

For Alonso, who has been starved of F1 success in recent seasons in an under-performing McLaren vehicle, the Indy 500 gives him a genuine shot at glory that would otherwise be unavailable.

OH rookie Zach Veach is driving for four-time Indy 500 victor A.J. Foyt in the Sunday, May 28 Indianapolis 500.

"I still lack experience in important moments of the race".

For last year's victor Rossi, Alonso's temporary switch to IndyCar has been significant for him personally and for the sport as a whole. Much of which is asset support that is unseen and things that we cant talk about.

Rookie Jack Harvey of Bassingham, England, pilots his Michael Shank Racing/Andretti Autosports Dallara IndyCar across the famous yard of bricks at the start-finish line at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway during a recent practice session.

Andretti found peace in his personal life when he proposed previous year to Marta Krupa at the home he bought from his father.

This rubber slowly builds up during practices and qualifying leading up to race day and gives the cars more grip. Then he will be gone from IndyCar.

"Maybe some of the fame whores, I don't know", said Dixon, a four-time IndyCar champion.

Karam, a former high school wrestler, flashed plenty of talent on the way up the developmental ladder.

For now, though, Andretti and his six drivers are focused on one goal: Topping Sunday afternoon with a drive through victory lane.

"It stays in the back of my mind but it's been nearly two years now since the situation happened", Karam said.

"I'm definitely happy with qualifying at the end and to be able to compete here", Alonso said. It's still in the back of my mind some nights and that's just part of it.

"Now he's got to get through the race".

"Now the second thing is just to enjoy the race, I don't have a clear target".

Alonso finished second the last time he raced at Indianapolis, albeit on the IMS road course, when F1 made its last stop there in 2007. "Can't make it three". The crowd won't reach the complete sellout last year, which allowed the local TV blackout to be lifted for the first time since 1950, but it could surpass 250,000 fans, continuing an upward trend that followed years of stagnation. "I didn't lose it because people didn't like me or I had troubles and stuff like that".

"I'm about where I need to be", Andretti said.

"I don't know the contract".

"For one, I'd be going insane if I was going to sleep every night thinking about that". But the two rookies are in unison with how awe inspiring it is to be considered "Indy 500 drivers". He reminded fans to not just put IMS into a Global Positioning System and go, because you'll end up right in the middle of a traffic mess.
