Ankara Summons US Ambassador In Dispute Over Washington Brawl

"A written and verbal protest was delivered due to the aggressive and unprofessional actions taken, contrary to diplomatic rules and practices, by USA security personnel", the foreign ministry said in a statement.

The Turkish foreign ministry said the United States ambassador was given a "written and verbal protest" against actions said to be "contrary to diplomatic rules and practices".

Two people who live in the US were arrested in the clash and at least 12 people, including a police officer, were injured.

Peaceful protests outside the Turkish embassy during Mr Erdoğan's visit erupted when demonstrators arrived carrying the flag of the Kurdish Democratic Union party.

The ministry also condemned the "unprofessional actions" of U.S. security officials towards Turkish bodyguards who were near the Turkish embassy to protect President Erdogan.

The Turkish government went on to blame American officials for the attack but said they would not let that overshadow Erdogan's visit with President Trump. Video appears to show Erdogan's security forces pushing past D.C.'s Metropolitan Police officers and violently breaking up a group of protesters, knocking down some and repeatedly kicking them in the head.

'We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms, ' said Heather Nauert, a State Department spokeswoman.

Pressure has been mounting on the Trump administration not to let the violence on USA soil go unpunished. "The aggressiveness and brutality demonstrated by the Turkish security personnel are interpreted by many of us as much more than an attack against peaceful demonstrators - it is an attack against these very rights". Ankara views the pro-Kurdish militant cells as a terrorist group, despite them leading the fight against IS in parts of Syria. In one of those videos, Erdogan seemed to watch the clash from afar as his bodyguards continued pummeling the protesters, sending several to the hospital.

Turkish Gendarmerie escort defendants Akin Ozturk (2L) and others involved in last Julys attempted coup in Turkey as they leave the prison where they are being held, ahead of their trial in Ankara. John McCain of Arizona, who said Turkey's ambassador "should leave" the United States.

The summoning of the ambassador, John Bass, sharply escalated a diplomatic rift between Turkey and the United States after the brawl, which prompted outrage in the United States, as well as calls for the prosecution of the Turkish guards and even the expulsion of Turkey's ambassador to Washington.

Turkey has said that the demonstrators were responsible for the incident.

"It has been formally requested that the USA authorities conduct a full investigation of this diplomatic incident and provide the necessary explanation", the statement said. The mayor as well as the police chief of DC, various Congressmen and the US State Department all condemned the violence.

The brawl has added to the U.S. and Turkey's already strained ties.
