Former CIA head to answer questions about Russian meddling

FBI agents investigating ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia reportedly are focused on meetings Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, had with Russian figures.

Kushner is being probed for his interactions with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak and a banker from Moscow, US media reported Friday.

The husband of Mr Trump's daughter Ivanka, as well as Mr Trump's senior aide, Mr Kushner is the only current White House official understood to be involved in the probe.

The FBI and the oversight committee as well as several other congressional panels are looking into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible connections between Russia and the Trump campaign.

Brennan's statements about the number of contacts between associates of the Trump campaign and the Russians again put details about the campaign's contacts with the Kremlin into the spotlight as reports emerged that Trump had asked his national intelligence director and NSA chief to state publicly there was no evidence of collusion before investigations into the matter were complete.

The statement from attorney Jamie Gorelick was issued Thursday amid reports that the FBI was investigating meetings Kushner had in December with Russian officials. Investigators believe he can provide information and while he claims that he's unaware of the FBI's scrutiny, his attorney Jamie Gorelick said that her client would talk with the Federal Bureau of Investigation if the agency asked.

Flynn announced a decision to step down in February after it was revealed he misled White House officials, including Vice President Mike Pence, about the extent of his talks with Russian officials. Others discussed leveraging their ties to Mr Viktor Yanukovych, the deposed president of Ukraine living in exile in Russian Federation, who at one time had worked closely with Mr Manafort.

The committee leaders are directing the two new subpoenas at Flynn's Virginia-based businesses because businesses don't have a right to plead the Fifth, Warner said.

The Post story cited anonymous "people familiar with the investigation" to say the FBI investigation does not mean that Kushner is suspected of a crime.

The intelligence described emails between then-Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz and a Clinton campaign operative suggesting that Lynch would make the FBI investigation of Clinton go away.

The leaders of the U.S. Senate Intelligence Committee said on Tuesday they would subpoena two of former national security adviser Michael Flynn's businesses after Flynn declined to comply with a subpoena for documents in the panel's Russian Federation probe.

Kushner in March said he was ready to testify about his Russian Federation meetings to the Senate Intelligence Committee.

The House Intelligence Committee subpoenas would be the first by the House panel targeting Flynn, who faces potential criminal charges for a number of actions, including failure to register as a foreign agent and failure to seek Pentagon permission to receive money for a Moscow speaking engagement. But Burr and Warner questioned "whether you can take the Fifth, as it relates to document production". Flynn was also present at the early-December meeting, and later that month, Flynn held a call with Kislyak to discuss US -imposed sanctions against Russian Federation.

Kushner initially failed to declare the meetings on forms to obtain a security clearance to serve in the White House.

The New York Times report was the latest indication of the depth of concerns within the USA intelligence community about Russian efforts to tip November's election toward Trump as he battled Democrat Hillary Clinton.
