North Korea: New long-range missile can carry heavy nuke

"We will sternly deal with the North, together with the global community", Mr. Moon said during a visit to the Defense Ministry in Seoul, Younhap News Agency reported.

Both the UN Security Council and Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Monday slammed recent ballistic missile launches conducted by the DPRK. It was a point that was also made by Nikki Haley, the USA envoy to the United Nations.

At the time, South Korea also suspended operations at the jointly run Kaesong Industrial Complex, in which South Korean companies operated in North Korean territory.

According to the North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the test was aimed at determining the missile's capability of carrying a "large-scale heavy nuclear warhead", though this has not been confirmed.

The top US commander in the Pacific, meanwhile, warned that North Korea's nuclear weapons program is "a recipe for disaster", three days after the communist state test-fired what some said was its most successful missile. What would you think would happen if North Korea used a nuclear weapon against the United States?

Following North Korea's ballistic missile launch on early Sunday, the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK) informed the South Korean military that the TPY-2 radar component of the recently stationed Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system detected the North Korean missile, the intelligence sources said. After Sunday's launch, Pyongyang gleefully hailed significant advances in developing a nuclear missile capable of reaching the U.S. mainland.

Later in the song, they refer to South Korea, saying, "this time, kid, you're going too far" and "your big brother's annoyed", a nod to China's view of itself as the pre-eminent political and economic power in northeast Asia.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in presides over National Security Council at the Presidential Blue House in Seoul, South Korea, May 14, 2017.

"If you are supporting North Korea, you are against the rest of the worldwide community", Haley said.

However, he has also said he is open to talks with Mr Kim.

Council members met Tuesday following Pyongyang's May 14 launch of a mid- to long-range missile that traveled 800 kilometers before landing in the sea west of Japan.

South Korean Ambassador Cho said it is "deeply regrettable" that North Korea launched a ballistic missile "only a few days after the inauguration of our new government in Seoul".

She indicated Washington and Beijing had agreed they would take action if a new test looked to be long range and leaning toward an intercontinental ballistic missile that could reach the United States.

Adm Harris, however, stressed that China and Russian Federation, the North's traditional backers, can no longer look the other way. "Clearly, there is a lot more leverage that China has, and we would like China to use", he said.

Pyongyang has carried out two atomic tests and dozens of missile launches since the beginning of past year in its quest to develop a missile capable of delivering a nuclear warhead to the continental United States.

"It is considered an IRBM (intermediate range ballistic missile) of enhanced caliber", he said, referring to a class of missile created to travel up to 3,000 to 4,000 km (1,860 to 2,485 miles).
