Trump scolds fellow NATO leaders: Spend more for military

The harsh tone had a toll, as Mr Trump was left largely on his own after the speech as leaders mingled and laughed with each other, leaving the USA president to stand silently on a stage ahead of a group photo.

North Atlantic Treaty Organisation officials had expected Trump to talk about payments but one European official said members were shocked by Trump's aggressive tone, the AP reported.

But one senior diplomat said Trump, who left the leaders' dinner before it ended to fly to Italy for Friday's Group of Seven summit, said the remarks did not go down well at all.

Even so, hopes were relatively high that the visit, Trump's first overseas trip as U.S. President, could help heal EU/U.S. relations and ongoing rows about European defense spending.

Trump is one of four leaders making their first appearance at a meeting of the Group of Seven, a policy gathering of the world's largest industrialized democracies.

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May said meanwhile she would raise directly with Trump the issue of leaks from a probe into the Manchester terror attack that have left British authorities infuriated with their USA counterparts.

NATO's chief affirmed that the alliance countries will join the global coalition fighting the Islamic State extremist group but will not wage direct war against the extremists.

European Council President Donald Tusk said on Friday he was "positively surprised" by Donald Trump's support for the EU as it manages Britain's departure, adding the USA president had agreed Brexit was just "an incident and not a threat".

Trump and his White House have long complained about "leakers" they think are trying to undermine his presidency.

Trump appeared to be greeted warmly by European Union leaders, despite his past comments publicly cheering the United Kingdom's vote to leave the EU last summer and slamming the alliance during his transition as "a vehicle for Germany".

President Trump has ordered the Justice Department to investigate the source of those leaks. But differences immediately emerged after his talks with the European Union's top officials Donald Tusk and Jean-Claude Juncker on climate change, trade, and above all Russian Federation.

"I will be making clear to President Trump today that intelligence that is shared between law enforcement agencies must remain secure", May said.

The President lunched with French President Emmanuel Macron, where the two leaders shook hands in a tense, white-knuckled embrace.

As the world cameras watched, Macron held on tight to Trump's notorious power grip as the two men sat next to each other, the Frenchman's mouth clenched and eyes firmly fixed at the tycoon's squinted stare.
