British Airways says computer outage causing global delays

"Were experiencing a global system outage", said the company in a reply to one disgruntled traveler on Twitter.

The glitch is believed to have been caused by a "power supply issue" and there is no evidence of a cyber attack, the airline said. In September previous year BA apologized to passengers for check-in delays caused by operational glitches that delayed flights at Gatwick and Heathrow, in a repeat of a similar incident that affected London-area flights for the airline last July. The airline said it was working to restore services out of Heathrow and Gatwick beginning Sunday, although some disruption is expected.

The move to scrap all flights came at the start of a bank holiday weekend and during half-term school holidays.

Some of the airline's website were unavailable and some travelers claimed they could not check in on the mobile app, the BBC reported.

Passengers at Gatwick Airport faced chaotic scenes and long queues due to a baggage system problem on Friday.

BA aircraft landing at Heathrow are unable to park up as outbound aircraft can not vacate the gates, which has resulted in passengers being stuck on aircraft. "None were working, apart from one", said Terry Page, booked on a flight to Texas.

Some customers have taken to social media having spent hours in their planes on the runway both prior to take-off and after landing, while BA's main hub in Terminal 5 of Heathrow looks to be more than little dishevelled. American Airlines, which operates code-share flights with BA, said it was unaffected. It said in a tweet that the problem is global. "Manpower, dealing with the backlog of aircraft out of position, parking spaces for the aircraft -it's a challenge and a choreographic nightmare", he said. Some critics say complex airline technology systems have not always kept up with the times. There were reports that hundreds of bags were left unattended as BA staff tried to control the situation.

The airline has experienced problems with its online check-in systems in the past.

In August a power surge near United States airline Delta's Atlanta headquarters caused computers to crash and led to widespread delays across Delta's entire network.
