Record 62 earns Noren title at Wentworth

Scott Jamieson started the third round of the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in a share of the lead but after nine, turbulent holes he was plummeting like Icarus as the wax melted.

"What I want to do is play better against better fields on better, tougher courses, and I view this as a very hard course against a very tough field".

Lee Westwood produced golf reminiscent of the late Seve Ballesteros to remain in contention to win the BMW PGA Championship at the 24th attempt.

Noren said: "It's probably my best ever round and I putted as good as I have done too".

"I'm fairly disappointed at the minute", said Lowry after making double-bogey on two of his last four holes.

Third place was split between Tanihara, Nicolas Colsaerts and Henrik Stenson.

SUGAR GROVE, Ill. (AP) - Texas junior Scottie Scheffler opened a three-stroke lead in the NCAA individual competition and Vanderbilt topped the team standings at Rich Harvest Farms.

It didn't help that shortly after Noren signed his card, the first rain of a glorious week arrived, but it was competitive anxiety, not drizzle, which was responsible for dampening the mood of the chasers.

Speaking to RTE Sport, Lowry said: "I'm not struggling on the greens".

"But overall, a win like this brings your confidence up, and that's what I've always needed, to believe in myself, and then it's easier to focus on what you need to do".

Italy's Francesco Molinari was second with a four-round total of 279.

Noren won for the ninth time on the European Tour, with four of the victories coming in a 10-event stretch last July-November.

It set the clubhouse target of 11-under 277, and Noren had to wait more than two hours to see if the lead would hold up in the European Tour's signature event.

His 62 equaled the lowest round of his professional career, matching one at the Portugal Masters in 2009, and established a new course record on the revamped West Course, which underwent a renovation program immediately after last year's event. Thomas Bjorn also shot a 62 in 2014.

"The last seven holes were a little bit easier playing downwind compared to the first two days", he said afterwards. And then he failed to convert either of the closing par-5 holes on 17 and 18.

This time, his 5-iron approach pitched at 210 yards and rolled just by the pin, giving him a left-to-right putt that he curled in despite saying he was "shaking". "I know I can play well around here, so I just try and do my thing".

"You could play an average golf course with flawless greens, and you'll find all the pros turn around and say what a fantastic golf course - you can have an wonderful golf course with terrible greens and unfortunately you're going to get guys that are going to bitch and moan about how bad the golf course is".

"I wasn't thinking much of the deficit".
