Trump talks up trip before returning to DC

To the White House, Trump's first trip overseas was an embodiment of the promises he made as a candidate to put America's interests first and break through the guardrails that have long defined US foreign policy.

But even as he touted the successes of his nine-day sweep through the Middle East and Europe before boarding Air Force One, Trump appeared eager to delay his return to Washington, where a storm of controversy awaits him.

"This trip has also been incredible for me as First Lady", Trump said, adding that she would never forget the women and children she met during visits to children's hospitals in Italy and Belgium.

The President said he was more confident than ever that the will existed for nations to work together against the terrorists that launched recent attacks in Manchester, England, and in Egypt.

Trump on May 27 said in a tweet he will make a final decision in the upcoming week.

Mr. Trump, who campaigned on withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement, delayed a decision on whether to commit to the accord, leaving the other G7 leaders to reaffirm their support without the USA on board.

The leaders also said they had narrowed their differences on trade, with Trump tweeting that the G7 countries were looking to end "all trade-distorting practices".

The president also called on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation nations to spend more on defense.

"We have been gone for close to nine days", Trump said before departing for Joint Base Andrews in Maryland. Trump has been unable to fully escape the Russian Federation controversy, but the pace of events, meetings and focus on foreign policy have distracted him in ways he won't be in Washington.

He's not a target in the FBI's investigation into Russia's interference in last year's presidential election, but agents do want to ask him a few questions about his interactions with Russian officials during the campaign and transition.

Trump's campaign team says the rally planned for Thursday has been postponed "due to an unforeseen change" in the president's schedule.

The president had been under heavy worldwide pressure during the trip to affirm the United States' commitment under the Paris agreement to reduce the emission of greenhouse gases and other pollutants believed to be warming the earth to harmful levels.

"The Germans are bad, very bad", Trump was quoted as saying during a meeting in Brussels with European Union leaders.

"The president was able to make some of the most unbelievable deals that have really been made by any administration ever", enthused his economic adviser Gary Cohn. And some are starting to question the chances for tax reform. "Changing the infrastructure of global trade to tilt it back toward the USA would save and create millions".

"Do you notice how much stronger we're getting, are you feeling it?"

The G-7 includes the U.S., Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.
