UN chief urges action on climate change as Trump debates

The Paris accord, which was agreed on in December of 2015 by almost 200 countries, aims to keep global temperatures from rising more than 2° C (3.6° F) above pre-industrial levels. Other nations might also decline to contribute to a fund set up to help poorer nations reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It has been signed by 175 countries and took effect in November 2016.

Australia's national interest is best served if the U.S. remains in the Paris climate change agreement, a Senate hearing has been told.

A frustrated German Chancellor Angela Merkel later warned that Europe "must take its fate into its own hands", citing the differences with Washington on climate change as evidence of their divergent paths.

Despite these reports, Trump is still publicly undecided on what the US will do regarding the agreement, indecision which has many world leaders concerned.

The US ranks as the world's second-largest carbon polluter, and initial estimates by universities and thinktanks suggest its withdrawal would add up to 3bn tonnes of extra carbon dioxide to the atmosphere each year, raising the global temperature by 0.1C to 0.3C by the end of the century. At least 147 parties have ratified the agreement.

To formalize the withdrawal, the Trump administration has two options. Should he do so, the USA would join Nicaragua and Syria as the only countries not participating in the agreement.

Unfortunately, after having spent a week in close quarters with both individuals on his first global trip, their pro-Paris agreement stances appear to have had no effect.

If Trump is serious about putting America first, he will announce his full support for the Paris climate accord.

Mr. Trump's administration has already begun the process of killing Obama-era climate regulations.

According a White House source, US President Donald Trump plans to pull out of the Paris climate accord.

"Following a successful global tour and the G-7 Summit in Italy, President Trump has an opportunity to relieve our nation of the unfair and economically devastating requirements of the Paris Agreement, the United Nations climate treaty he pledged to rip up during the campaign", Cruz wrote in an op-ed in CNN.

But pulling out of the agreement is popular with Mr. Trump's political base, many of whom are skeptical of the science underlying climate change policy.
