Trump receiving updates explosion in Philippines

He told reporters at the scene that the building was being searched, and that it was unclear how the attacker gained entry.

The battle for Marawi, a largely Muslim city, has displaced at least 70,000 residents and left 140 people dead.

That unrest had sparked fears that the militants might attack elsewhere to divert the focus of thousands of troops trying to quell the siege.

Resorts World Manila said on Twitter: "Resorts World Manila is now on lockdown following reports of gunfire from unidentified men".

The Philippines' police chief said on Friday there was no indication the shooting incident at a Manila gaming resort was related to terrorism and it may have been a robbery.

Dozens of police trucks and a handful of huge Special Action Force vans and armoured personnel carriers lined side streets near the hotel, casino and shopping mall complex as the drama unfolded.

There are early reports of multiple gunmen, however, witnesses told CNN the shooter had covered his face.

Gen. Ronald Dela Rosa says authorities have reviewed CCTV footage from the scene and the lone gunman "was not hurting anyone".

One video posted on Twitter showed crowds of people rushing out Resorts World late at night and in another the sound of weapons being fired could be heard.

Gun shots and explosions rang out from the resort early on Friday and local media reported armed men were inside.

"One of them was carrying a bottle", Dones said.

Director-General Ronald dela Rosa, chief of the Philippine National Police, said injuries were caused by stampede and not gunfire.

US President Donald Trump Thursday expressed sadness and sympathy for victims of what he labelled a "terrorist attack" at a casino in the Philippines capital Manila.

Dela Rosa was less equivocal, saying that it appeared not to be a terrorist attack but that an investigation would determine the gunman's motive.

"But it is really very sad as to what is going on throughout the world with terror".

"We ask for your prayers during these hard times", the resort tweeted.

"We are closely monitoring the situation".

RWM is a major resort complex and tourist destination near Manila International Airport.

The SITE Intelligence Group reported earlier that a Filipino ISIS operative claimed responsibility for the attack.
