Question Time: Leaders Special

BBC to Tighten Rules on Free TV for Old People By Gary Cutlack on 23 May 2017 at 12:30PM No more putting up grandad in return for a free TV license

Despite speculation throughout the day about the intentions of Theresa May, the prime minister stuck with her original decision to stay away and send the home secretary, Amber Rudd, to represent the Conservatives in her place.

Other stories making the headlines include a "secret plan" by Labour to increase migration, as covered by the Telegraph and Daily Mail, while Guardian columnist Rafael Behr takes down the Prime Minister for repeating her mantra about "no deal is better than a bad deal" on Brexit, suggesting that while it appears popular, it's also a "nonsense". Plaid Cymru leader Leanne Wood, Green Party co-leader Caroline Lucas, Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron lined up with Ms Rudd and Mr Corbyn to debate the Government's record and lay out their manifesto pledges ahead of next Thursday's general election.

The Conservatives are now concerned that the audience might be similarly-biased against Mrs May at tonight's Question Time special, which is broadcast from York. Michael Deacon in the Telegraph said Mr Corbyn's performance had shades of his shadow home secretary Diane Abbott when she could not recall how much it would cost to recruit 10,000 police officers.

The Greens co-leader was praised for challenging Ms Rudd about why the United Kingdom is the second biggest arms dealer in the world, while Mr Robertson was commended for accusing Labour of "aping Ukip" on immigration.

Lambasting retorts from Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn drove the most engagements with over 223,000 tweets, retweets, replies, comments and likes - a significant payout for his decision to enter the debate.

But Mr Nuttall rebuked by shouting "You invited Hamas, you invited Hamas to the House of Commons", referring to when Mr Corbyn called the members "friends".

"Where do you think Theresa May is tonight?"

And attacking Mr Corbyn again, she said: "I know there is no extra payment you don't want to add to, no tax you don't want to rise".

She said: "It's as though he thinks it's some sort of game - a game of Monopoly perhaps where you ask the banker for the red money to pay electrics, the green money to buy the railways and the yellow money to buy the gasworks". She would have been angrily assailed by the other leaders and found herself having to shout to make herself heard or completely drowned out.

The audience were very vocal when Ms Rudd asked voters to "judge (the Conservatives) on our record". "Don't give her yours".
