Tiger Woods: What happened and what next on and off the course

According to the police report, Woods was in his Mercedes asleep at the wheel with the motor running and right blinker flashing on Monday.

'I understand the severity of what I did and I take full responsibility for my actions, ' Woods said. Tiger Woods attributed an "unexpected reaction" to prescription medicine for his arrest on a DUI charge that landed him in a Florida jail Monday for almost four hours.

However, contrary to reports on Monday which said Woods refused a breathalyzer test, the golfer agreed and "blew zeroes" indicating there was no alcohol in his system.

As recently as last week, Woods wrote in a blog on his website that "I want to say unequivocally, I want to play professional golf again", despite admitting his fourth back operation meant he would be unable to "twist" for another three months.

"Obviously, I don't really know what happened, what went on", he said.

The former world number one has blamed the DUI arrest near his home in Jupiter, Florida on an adverse reaction to prescription medication.

"Tiger, I always thought, was going to break my record", Nicklaus said.

Woods is scheduled to be arraigned July 5 in Palm Beach County on the DUI charge.

Woods told police he was taking several prescriptions, including two painkillers. It said Woods was cooperative but had a hard time walking and keeping his eyes open.

The police officer found Woods' vehicle parked on the right-hand side of the road with the motor running and the brake lights on. Police also cited him for improper parking.

A dazed Woods told the officer that he had traveled from Los Angeles, where he was golfing. But he said he had not taken Vioxx this year.

After a few hours in jail, Woods was released on his own recognizance.

It left players on the PGA Tour hopeful for better times, and not just on the golf course.

"I feel bad for Tiger", Nicklaus said. That Woods was a new and improved human being since his extramarital sex scandal from hell, a better father and friend, with or without golf in his life.

'He's been great for the game of golf but he needs our help, and I wish him well'.

Woods' current sponsors - including Nike, Bridgestone and Monster Energy - did not immediately comment on Tuesday. His career has recently been set back by physical injuries, and he has not won a major title since June 2008.
