Trump waives law requiring US to move embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

President Trump speaks in the Oval Office at the White House May 31

Israel's political system reacts to US President Donald Trump's decision today (Thursday) to sign the waiver to postpone the US embassy's transfer to Jerusalem by another 6 months.

The US embassy in Israel will stay in Tel Aviv for a while longer, after President Donald Trump temporarily waived a law requiring its relocation to Jerusalem.

But the White House suggested the embassy would eventually be relocated.

King Abdullah 11 of Jordon visited Washington soon after President Trump's inauguration during which, the NYT report said, he warned President Trump of moving the embassy to Jerusalem, saying that it would evoke a possible violent backlash among Arabs and would laid to rest chances of any peace deal between Israel and the Middle Eastern Muslim countries.

A Morning Consult survey conducted as Trump returned home from his first global trip through the region - which featured visits to Saudi Arabia, Israel and the Palestinian territories - showed that 59 percent of registered voters, including 74 percent of Democrats and 62 percent of independents, said they thought it was unlikely that Trump would be able to successfully negotiate a peace deal.

Oren, a member of the centrist Kulanu party, said Trump had lost credibility with some Israelis who believed him when he promised during his campaign for the presidency to move the embassy. He has since, however, stalled on his pledge.

USA law has required the relocation of the embassy to Jerusalem since the Clinton era. However, it could send a strong signal to Palestinians that the US will favor Israel if the Trump administration manages to resuscitate the peace process.

Israel occupied the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, during the 1967 Arab-Israeli War. Jerusalem is the unquestionable capital of Israel and should be fully recognized as such. But every president since 1995 has signed the suspension order at intervals of six months.

Hussam Zomlot, Palestinian ambassador to the United States, also issued a statement. "We're looking at it very, very strongly".

Trump has expressed a desire to help broker the "ultimate deal" between Israel and Palestine, meeting with leaders from both sides during his recent trip overseas.

Press secretary Sean Spicer reiterated in a statement that the president is still committed in his support for Israel and to the eventual embassy move.

"The delay in the transfer of the embassy actually makes it hard for real peace because it fosters a false expectation among the Palestinians to divide Jerusalem, which will never happen". Israel has declared Jerusalem, a city that is central to Judaism, as its "eternal" capital.

Unless Trump signs a waiver as did Bill Clinton, George W. Bush and Barack Obama before midnight, the decision to make the historic move will have been made by non-action.

The statement says: "Maintaining embassies outside the capital drives peace further away by helping keep alive the Palestinian fantasy that the Jewish people and the Jewish state have no connection to Jerusalem". A spokesman for Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas said it's an "important positive step" and shows the USA is serious about promoting peace.
