UK Police Declare London Bridge, Borough Market Incidents as Terrorism

Witnesses report a vehicle hitting pedestrians on the London Bridge and injured people on the ground.

He said the pub was then closed and armed police told them to leave the area.

The Daily Mail reports that at least seven people are believed to have been stabbed while eyewitnesses said bodies were "strewn" on the road.

Emergency services are now at the scene of a "major incident" on London Bridge, where a van is understood to have veered off the road and hit several pedestrians.

Authorities gave no indication as to whether the incidents were connected.

"I'd say there are about four severely injured people".

"I was shouting at everybody, just get away from the area, stay back, just run the other way".

She said she could see six casualties.

London Bridge and the area around it has been closed due to a "major police incident", TFL said.

About two hours after the first reports of an incident, television images showed people walking away from the London Bridge area with their hands on their heads.

Witnesses have described seeing a speeding vehicle veer into crowds on London Bridge and people being stabbed in Borough Market. The patrons sheltered in the basement, the witness said.

Tim Farron, the Liberal Democrat leader, said in a tweet: "Tonight's horrific incidents in London remind us how much we owe our emergency services".

A witness told the Reuters news agency she saw three people with what appeared to be throats cut on the bridge.

Prime Minister Theresa May, who has been campaigning in the General Election, was returning to Downing Street to receive further briefings from securityofficials, No 10 said.

The gang had canisters attached to their chests as they stabbed multiple people in nearby Borough Market.

She will chair a meeting of the Government's Cobra emergency committee on Sunday, No 10 said. The patrons sheltered in the basement and police then arrived at the scene, the witness said.

In the wake of the Manchester attack, the United Kingdom government increased the terror alert to critical, the highest level, and deployed the army to support police.

Senator Dastyari said he had no details of what had happened but praised the professionalism of police on the scene.

The attacks came within weeks of the May 22 suicide bombing in Manchester in northern England that killed 22 people at a pop concert by USA singer Ariana Grande.

The force initially said officers were also responding to a reported third incident, in the Vauxhall area of London.
