'Peace Is A Choice,' Trump Says During Appearance With Palestinian Leader

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu (R) and US President Donald Trump speak upon the latter's arrival at Ben Gurion International Airport in Tel Aviv on May 22, 2017, as part of his first trip overseas.

"Only under our sovereignty Jerusalem had become an island of tolerance", Netanyahu said.

"Bilateral relations will be much better under Trump because he has a similar worldview as Netanyahu", Phillips said.

Earlier this month, Israel rejected as "absurd" a UNESCO resolution it said denies Jews' historical connection to Jerusalem by presenting Israel as an occupying power there.

That omission encouraged Israel's right-wing but it disappointed Palestinians.

Back in Jerusalem, Trump gave a speech at the Israel Museum, where he said "my administration will always stand with Israel". He promised that although "Iran's leaders routinely call for Israel's destruction-not with Donald J. Trump". But in his speeches in Jerusalem, made do with vague platitudes of how "both Israelis and Palestinians seek lives of hope for their children".

David Rubin, a former mayor of the Israeli city of Shiloh, says he was struck by Trump's kind feelings for Israel and he says most Israelis sensed that kindness, too. As the first sitting president to visit the Western Wall - the second holiest site in Judaism - Trump scored with Israelis on rhetorical, visual and historic fronts.

Standing alongside Trump, Abbas, 82 and in the 12th year of his original five-year term, said he was determined to deliver an agreement for all Palestinians, although he did not provide any substance on how such an objective could be achieved, reported Reuters.

The radio station quoted Palestinian officials as saying that Al-Jubeir had played a role in persuading Trump to postpone the step of moving the embassy, in order to help secure suitable conditions for the resumption of Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations.

Mr Abbas is an unpopular leader, according to polls, and the Palestinian political landscape is split between his Fatah party and Hamas, the Islamist movement that is in control in the Gaza Strip and opposes negotiations with Israel. "I look forward to working with these leaders toward a lasting peace". In Bethlehem Mr Trump lectured President Abbas that "peace can never take root in an environment where violence is tolerated, funded and even rewarded". Trump also said that Iran should have thanked the USA for the 2015 nuclear agreement, because it led to sanctions being lifted. Meeting Netanyahu in Washington in February, he said he would support a single state if it led to peace, delighting Israeli right-wingers who want to see most of the West Bank annexed.

Obama finalized an agreement with Iran in 2015, when the US promised to lift more than $100 billion in sanctions against the Middle Eastern nation in exchange from keeping nuclear weapons out of its hands.

Israel continues to seize Palestinian land for Jewish-only colonization and to violently suppress the Palestinian population with no consequences from the United States.
