Church bus crashes in Atlanta area; 1 killed, others injured

The bus appeared to roll over onto a passenger vehicle.

Frank Rucker, Finance Administrator at the church, said they are still assessing the situation, according to CBS affiliate WHNT-TV.

Madison County Commissioner Phil Vandiver's wife and son were on the bus.

The bus, carrying student missionaries of a church, crashed around 3:30 p.m. local time along Camp Creek Parkway of the city, multiple news outlets cited police sources as saying.

The post says there are "several serious injuries" but did not provide further details.

The Mount Zion Baptist Church bus from Huntsville, Alabama, was headed to Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for a flight to South Africa, officials said. They are taking calls from the people on the bus to find out more about who is injured.

Circumstances surrounding the cause of the crash were not immediately available. We know things happen for a reason so we're gonna find the good. "Couldn't get much information, but him and his mama were fine", Vandiver said. Some were reported critically injured. "We just want to keep those other family members that have more serious injuries, want to keep those in our prayers and keep those remembered".

"When bad stuff happens, we all want to question why", Lance Roberson said.

The church spokesperson told WGCL-TV that 42 people were on the bus.

The church members were on their way to Botswana, where they were going to do mission work helping with a Vacation Bible School. Mount Zion Baptist Church in Huntsville, Alabama, posted on its Facebook page that a bus with its student ministry mission crashed while traveling to the airport. "There's just not much you can say".
