India, Pakistan join China and Russia-led security bloc

On the second and final day of the six-nations summit, PM Modi said that after 12 years of observership, India will get membership of SCO.

He further said that his country is willing to cooperate with India within the SCO framework and contribute to the healthy and sustained development of the organisation.

As per reports, India abstained from the summit to highlight its concerns over the United States dollars 50 billion CPEC which is part of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) and passes through Gilgit and Baltistan in Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The two countries will also participate in "joint military exercises" in a move toward counterterrorism cooperation, according to Al-Arabiya reports. This, he said, would give new dimension to the relations among the SCO countries.

"We Pakistan realised that we have a lot to learn from the wisdom of the founding members as we orient our foreign policy in a changing global environment", said Nawaz Sharif.

Modi emphasized that connectivity initiatives are essential to reap the benefits of the projects and it reflects with our decisions of International North-South Transport Corridor, Ashgabat Agreement and the Chabahar deal.

Xi also congratulated India on becoming an official member state of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) security bloc, jointly led by Russian Federation and China.

This is why, in Putin's words, "there is a need to strengthen coordination between the SCO member states' special services, particularly through the regional counterterrorism agency". "India is having partnership with SCO countries in several aspects on energy, education, security, development partnership agriculture, minerals, capacity building, trade and investment are the main drivers".

The event kicked off early on Friday in Kazakh capital city of Astana and, during the meetings, the Iranian top diplomat met with a host of officials from the member statesof the organization. "The admission will ensure greater peace and economic cooperation of the region", Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev said during the opening of the SCO Summit.

The SCO was formed by China, Russia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan in 2001 to fight threats posed by radical Islam and drug trafficking from neighboring Afghanistan.
