Hicks, Montgomery help lead Yankees past Orioles

New York's 16 runs are its most since April 6 of last season. Immediately after Baltimore scored two, the Yankees struck back in their half of the second, Starlin Castro's tenth homer of the season and a Chase Headley sac fly - which was maybe two feet short of being a two-run homer - knotting the game at two.

CLEVELAND - David Holmberg allowed two runs in five innings for his first win in two years and Chicago defeated Cleveland. The Orioles only had one hit after the second inning.

The Orioles lost for the 12th time in their last 18 games and did not get a hit after Ruben Tejada's second hit of the game. The lefty closer, who was placed on the disabled list on May 14 with rotator cuff inflammation, will throw a simulated game Saturday in Tampa.

In Friday's opener, the Yankees banged out an 8-2 win.

The Yankees designated LHP Tommy Layne for assignment following the game and will recall RHP Domingo German from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

The Yankees have yet to confirm the move.

After walking slugger Aaron Judge, Jackson allowed an RBI double to Matt Holliday off the left-center-field wall that gave the Yankees a 6-2 cushion.

The club has already tried switching Tanaka's stride from the first-base side of the rubber to the third base side - FYI, he's headed back to his original side on Monday. He is 0-1 with a 8.44 ERA in two starts against the Orioles this season. Hicks hit a two-run shot into the second deck in right for his 10th home run, giving him 34 RBIs.

The Yankees are also benefitting from a run of solid starting pitching after the best outing of Jordan Montgomery's brief career.

He turned on an 0-1 changeup, clearing the Orioles bullpen beyond the left-field fence and sending it deep into the stands.

Montgomery (4-4) set a career high with eight strikeouts in the longest outing of his 11 major league starts. It was the 10th by a Yankee this season, matching their entire total from last season.

The Orioles couldn't capitalize on a scoring opportunity in the fifth. He retired 17 of his final 18 hitters, helped by Trey Mancini's fifth-inning lineout to drawn-in shortstop Didi Gregorius, pinning a runner at third.

In that second inning, the first three batters reached for the O's, the sequence going Chris Davis walk, Jonathan Schoop homer, JJ Hardy single to give Baltimore a 2-0 lead and a runner on with no one out. After Aaron Hicks walked and Judge singled, Holliday hit a 1-0 pitch from Stefan Crichton into the right field seats.

Bundy escaped his biggest trouble in the sixth, when he put two on with one out after allowing the home run to Hicks. Souza, who entered in a 1-for-24 slide, had three hits and came within a double of hitting for the cycle.

Despite their recent poor play, the Orioles still have a chance to clinch their division, which is good news for their fans.
