London Bridge attacker tried to rent larger truck

But the payment by the gang's leader, Khuram Butt, failed to go through.

The attack left eight people dead and dozens more injured. Police are also appealing for information about the "distinctive" pink "Ernesto" brand knives the men were carrying.

The van crosses London Bridge from north to south, then crosses back, then does a u-turn and crosses again heading south and hitting pedestrians on the pavement.

He said: "Because of the fact his payment method failed he couldn't get hold of that lorry". Shortly before 1700 GMT, Butt received a text message confirming his hire of a Renault van instead. The three terrorists were named by the police as Khuram Butt, Rachid Redouane and Youssef Zaghba.

People walk past a police sign on Borough High Street one week after the terrorist attack on nearby London Bridge and Borough Market, Saturday, June 10, 2017.

The truck they had wanted to hire was smaller but similar to the one used in last year's Nice attack in which more than 80 people were killed in France.

After his payment was declined, Butt and his two accomplices rented a smaller van that they used to plough into crowds before they went on a stabbing rampage in an attack that left eight people dead and almost 50 people injured.

Police also found 13 Molotov cocktails made of wine bottles filled with flammable liquid and two blowtorches inside the white van alongside several office chairs and a suitcase, which police say the men may have used to cover their motive. Once across they turned around and travelled back the way they came, before turning around at the top and setting off on their final deadly journey, ploughing into pedestrians as they went.

"We won't let them win and London will carry on", she said. As an example in this particular attack, we know that the attackers hired a vehicle that very day.

There were blow torches for lighting these "Molotov cocktails".

Although the Islamic State group has claimed responsibility for the London Bridge attack, police have said there was no evidence that the perpetrators - Pakistani-born Briton Khuram Butt, Italian Youssef Zaghba and Rachid Redouane, who had links to Libya, Morocco and Ireland - were directed by anyone else, either in Britain or overseas.

Among the evidence were plastic water bottles, like those used to create the fake suicide belts each of the terrorists was wearing during the attack. "People are absolutely determined to do everything they can to stop such an attack in the future".

Three 12in knives with pink blades were recovered at the scene of the killings. Butt's knife also had a leather strap attached to the handle to keep the knife secured around his wrist.

Police raided Redouane's residence on Tuesday and said he had been renting it since April.

This address is being treated as the "safe house" where the three men plotted the attack.

Five other men, aged 27-30, remain in police custody, with 12 others released without charge in connection with the latest terror attack on London. All but five have been released.

Detectives made their 20th arrest in relation to the investigation on Saturday. Police on the spot eliminated three of the attackers.

"I agree with the Prime Minister [Theresa May] when she said that we do need to review across the board how we are tackling terrorism, in terms of our powers, in terms of how we are working with our communities and what is happening in our communities, in terms of the internet, in terms of our equipment, in terms of our computers and so forth".

Forensic work at this flat has determined that they acted alone.
