DUP to support minority Tory government after 'confidence and supply' deal reached

Timothy conceded in a statement that he had failed to carry out an effective election campaign, while Hill made no mention of her performance.

Conservative Prime Minister Theresa May is trying to reach an agreement with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party to form a minority government.

Conservative chief whip Gavin Williamson went to Belfast on Saturday for talks with the Northern Ireland party.

"Other personnel issues are for other days", she said when asked about their future.

It was three years before the next scheduled election, and the conservatives already had a secure, if small, majority. Their influence had increasingly angered senior ministers.

Speaking outside 10 Downing Street after visiting the Queen at Buckingham Palace, May said she would form a government by working with "friends and allies" in the DUP, which won 10 seats in yesterday's election.

The change may help to quell some of the unrest within the party.

PARKER: I think her time as prime minister now is measured in months rather than in years.

Details of the agreement will be discussed and agreed by cabinet on Monday ( Tim Ireland/PA) A Downing Street spokesman said details will be discussed and agreed by cabinet on Monday, after which more information is likely to be released.

That would involve them supporting a Conservative minority government on key votes in parliament but not forming a formal coalition partnership.

'We have a situation in the Northern Ireland right now where there has been a political crisis where the Government is the mediator with the Irish government between the DUP and Sinn Fein.

Critics say a Conservative-DUP alliance also jeopardizes the United Kingdom government's credibility on climate issues.

May called the election in April in an attempt to extend her majority and strengthen her Brexit-negotiating position, but her gamble backfired spectacularly, triggering fresh concern for the financial sector and businesses.

Angela Merkel has said Brexit negotiations should go ahead as scheduled in nine days' time - despite the United Kingdom being plunged into political turmoil by the General Election.

SIEGEL: When you look at the results from the election, whether the vote returns or the exit polls, do you understand it?

The British pound tumbled on Friday against the US dollar and the euro before stabilising, down 1.7 and 1.4 percent against the two currencies respectively.

"What tonight is about is the rejection of Theresa May's version of extreme Brexit", said Keir Starmer, Labour's policy chief on Brexit, saying his party wanted to retain the benefits of the European single market and customs union.

The EU's chief negotiator said the bloc's stance on Brexit and the timetable for the talks were clear, but the divorce negotiations should only start when Britain is ready. It's clearly threatened her own rule.

Mrs May's plans laid in tatters on Friday after an unexpected surge in support for Labour saw the Conservatives lose seats, falling short of an overall majority.

The Times newspaper's front page declared that Britain was "effectively leaderless" and the country "all but ungovernable".

Mrs May is finalising the agreement over this weekend but it has caused alarm because of the socially conservative agenda of the DUP. "The task of restoring orderly government in order to make sense of Brexit is now a national emergency, and it falls to them".

"We really do not care too much about the majority, the bottom line is that this is a train crash coming anyway, whatever her majority", said one European Commission official.

Managing that process will not be easy. With the 10 DUP MP seats, the Conservatives will now have just enough votes to put them over the threshold.
