Theresa May's best hope, DUP opposes abortion, same-sex marriage

Whoever wins today the fight for Brexit goes

A hung parliament with confidence and supply agreements looms. We want to end austerity and invest in this country and that's what we're going to do.

The Conservative-backing Daily Telegraph newspaper had earlier warned: "May must accept that the result is an indictment of the furtive way she does business".

The Conservatives lost their parliamentary majority in Thursday's election. A party spokesman confirmed the resignation of Hill, a combative character who one ex-colleague said had helped create "toxic" atmosphere at the heart of government.

They were replaced by Gavin Barwell, a former housing minister who lost his seat in the election.

Labour increased their vote by three million in this election and Jez believes he has the support to lead Britain. May had relied on Timothy and Hill for advice and support since her previous job at the interior ministry, and their resignations will be a personal blow.

Joint chiefs of staff Nick Timothy and Fiona Hill formed part of May's small inner circle and were blamed by many Conservatives for the party's lacklustre campaign and unpopular election platform, which alienated older voters with its plan to make them pay more for long-term care.

If May was right that her party's narrow majority impaired her ability to negotiate optimal terms for withdrawal from the European Union, it's hard to see how she (or another Conservative prime minister) wouldn't be at an even greater disadvantage negotiating on behalf of a minority government.

May also reappointed an old adversary - Michael Gove, a former rival for the Conservative leadership whom May fired from the Cabinet when she took office a year ago.

Before the election, she had been widely expected to sack finance minister Philip Hammond following a reported clash over her Brexit strategy.

If Corbyn had claimed seven more seats, the total seats won by Labour, the Lib Dems, the SNP, Plaid Cymru, the Green Party and one independent MP would have come to 322 - enough to dethrone the Conservatives of their power.

Labour gained 30 seats in the general election to take its total to 262 seats, but the Conservatives remain the largest party in Parliament with 318 seats. His party "didn't win the election", Corbyn says, but he is prepared to continue resisting the Conservative agenda - especially what's known as "hard Brexit", a clean break with the European Union and departure from its single market system.

The source said the DUP was likely to seek a role in Brexit negotiations but was likely to steer clear of social issues such as abortion and gay rights, where it disagrees with Conservative Party positions.

Opponents of Prime Minister Theresa May's Conservative Party rally in Parliament Square in London.

May announced the party would try to work with Northern Ireland's Democratic Unionist Party, an alliance that is fraught with difficulties.

She said Brexit talks would begin on June 19 as scheduled, the same day as the formal reopening of parliament.

Speaking on BBC Radio 4's Today programme, Mr Leslie said: "We shouldn't pretend that this is a famous victory".
