Harry Kane describes his feelings after first match as England captain

The fire

England looked to be crawling towards a just deserved albeit boring 1-0 win thanks to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain's finish but two wonder strikes from Leigh Griffiths in the 87th and 90th minute put Scotland on the brink of their first win against the Three Lions since 1985.

Gordon Strachan's men were now in touching distance of a massive win before captain Harry Kane netted deep into injury-time from a Raheem Sterling centre.

"I would say that equalising goal was probably the most special moment of my career".

"It looked like we were going to win the game and then like we were going to lose when 2-1 down in stoppage time".

"They were with us all the way and they helped us get over the line or get the point".

Hart, who watched the game on television with his senior team mates, has never even got close to a major tournament final in his time with England.

Kane's goal was the Tottenham Hotspur striker's sixth in 18 global appearances and came at the end of his first game under Southgate, after injuries had kept him out of England's six previous matches.

"They get two goals from nowhere, but we still managed to claim a point". Rooney was not selected by Southgate for this particular worldwide break, and there are questions as to how long before Rooney decides to hang up his England boots for good.

Hart, ostracised by Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola and likely to leave the Premier League club this summer, was also guilty of high-profile mistakes during last summer's European Championships as England were embarrassingly eliminated by Iceland.

Gordon Strachan's side travel to Lithuania on September 1 before a home game against Malta three days later, finishing off the section in October with the visit of Slovakia and a trip to Slovenia.

"I don't think Scotland are far off", he said.

"Hampden is a tough place to come to and there was a great atmosphere", added the 23-year-old.

'I know what I want to do and this team has great ambition.

England trained with the Royal Marines in the build up to the match, and Kane praised the determination of the squad. "It got us back into contention and if we can perform like we did in that match, then we will certainly cause England a few problems".

"We should never gotten into that position with the amount of quality in our side".

"We have really good cover in most positions but defensive midfield is an area where we're a little short".

Southgate was particularly pleased that his players had shown exactly the kind of approach he had demanded from them during their team talks in the week's build-up.

"I think we had three down with cramp as well".

"The first free-kick was careless, the second (given away) was a slip, so I am not sure there is a lot we could have done about that".
