Stam won't leave Reading for Leeds United job

Monk hopes to blast Boro to top flight

"Out of respect for Leeds, but having gone there and worked for Massimo originally".

Stam, 44, is on a shortlist of candidates drawn up by the club's owner Andrea Radrizzani whose arrival coincided with Garry Monk stepping down, according to the YEP.

"I wanted the right challenge", Monk told the gathered press at his conference. "And all the boxes were ticked at Middlesbrough." .

Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester City all scouted the 24-year-old last season, although the champions have showed the most interest in him.

Gibson has been the chairman at Boro ever since 1994 and Monk felt that his passion for the football club was a real driving force in convincing him that Middlesbrough is the place to be right now.

However, the former Swansea boss is delighted to take charge at the Riverside Stadium and believes the foundations are in place for a promotion push despite a disappointing season in the top flight a year ago.

Gibson has spoken of his desire to "smash" the Championship next season as Boro look to make their stay outside the top flight as short as possible. I'm ambitious and want to be working and find that challenge, and all of those ticked boxes that I needed to go forward were with Middlesbrough.

However, Stam's agent Henk Timmer has ruled out a move to Elland Road for his client, insisting he would only leave the Royals for a Premier League position.

"It doesn't always have to be the biggest club, it's about what the opportunity is. I want to keep our best players and the club is in agreement with that".

Discussions regarding the make-up of Monk's backroom staff are being held with further announcements expected in due course, with United first-team coach James Beattie tipped to join up officially with Boro shortly.
